Vinnie Posted June 2, 2006 Share Posted June 2, 2006 First, Sorry if this has already been posted... but the search is not working for me.I'm running a small business upgrading/installing things for people in the local area. I have a customer who is very strong to Windows 95B. They rescently bought a broadband package. It came with one of them Speedtouch 330 USB Modems (The Silver Rev. 4 One). Go to install the software. Of Course it says. Only Compatible on Windows 98SE/ME/2k/Xp. I Know it's a USB device & USB support maybe a little sloppy. But is there anyway that I can mod the installer file so the drivers will install on Windows 95. By the way suggesting a cheap upgrade to even Windows 98SE didn't go down well. They'll never notice the difference, except that the system seems much more stable than usual Win95 did not have proper USB support... prx984 Posted June 3, 2006 Share Posted June 3, 2006 whats wrong with windows 95? other than the USB it was a good operating system. i used it for about 6 years, until i got an XP machine. All the OS's in between 95 and XP i didnt think to much of. Except maybe ME, i like that OS. it runs good for me, never had any problems with it. 2000 was good too, but XP was just way better. runs better too. anyway, the best thing i think your going to be able to do is load up 98 and change the ui like LLXX said, its the best your going to be able to do. hope you can get something done, oh whats the specs on the 95 system? just for interest sake.-brianPS: maybe try seeing if they can get a different modem, one with a cat5 connection on it, then tell them to get an old LAN card that has support for windows 95. thatll work too. Is there a way to edit any Hex code in the installer. Or any way to make the Installer "Think" it's running on 98?. By the way the reason this machine needs 95 is because of some programs or something that they wrote & will not run successful even on 98.. apparently. Looks like 95, smells like 95, much more compatible with many things, still works identically to 95 GUI. Change LOGO.SYS to the one offered with later 95 systems and you cannot tell the difference. [Note: No logo file says pretty much what later logo files for 95 say, but in 98 that would be a dead giveaway.]Until 98lite MICRO shell, I used 95 also to create complete bootable systems on LS-120 A: drive as a maintenance tool. Now I don't have to, since 98lite MICRO fits in about 80-odd meg before apps.98SE USB support far better than 98 First Edition in turn far better than 95, especially when patched with available fixes only for SE. I remember when I got my first 56K modem that CLAIMED USB support, it never worked until 98SE with the patches, which officially MS said would never be available in 98 FE. USR told me 95 was impossible, wait for 98, but even they didn't know that it wouldn't be until 98SE AND numerous available patches [applied by Unofficial 98 Second Edition Service Pack 2.1a is the most convenient way to get there] then it would actually work!cjl [98lite SLEEK and MICRO use Win95 shell over 98/SE/ME guts] Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
