When I start Defrag I get the following message:

The procedure entry point ?PickIconDig@@YGHPAUHWND_@@PAGIPAH@Z

could not be located in the dynamic link library mmcbase.dl

I have searched Microsft's Knowledge Base, useless.

Anyone ever seen this, I have 3 PC's having the same problem.

XP Home

SP2

That sounds very bogus to me. I've never seen anything like that before. The first thing that comes to mind is spyware / viruses corrupting system files. The second thing that comes to mind is a sloppy registry cleansing. A potential solution is to Google and download Dial-A-Fix which will re-register dozens of DLL files. I highly suggest you try that tool.

From experience and reading articles and user opinions, I also suggest you forget about the Windows defragmenter as it is 5 years old and doesn't do a good enough job to be called an efficient piece of software. Google, download and try PerfectDisk. It allows you to do an "offline" (boot) defrag of the boot files, metadata, MFT and page file. Within Windows, it allows you to do a SmartPlacement defrag which organizes files based on how often they are accessed. You can also specify how many days a "rare" usage and a "frequent" usage is. I always set rare to 30 days and frequent to 7 days. Also it concentrates on Free Space Consolidation, and there is an option to do an "aggressive" F.S.C. while defragging. All of this far outperforms the standard and aged Windows defragmenter. Even though it is a trial version, I like that it does not limit it's functionality in the trial version. I hope you give it a try and find it useful for future use.

Cheers,

Jeremy

Thanks for the tips Jeremy.

I have just downloaded Dial-A-Fix and will try it on this box.

Client is to tight to buy anything else. Remember, user is a four letter word !!!

Did not find any Virus's or Spyware.

I gave the FULL error, the heading is "MMC.EXE - Entry point not found"

I personaly would start wit running an sfc /scannow

*you'll need an apropriate installation cd for this sp2 sp1 no sp etc.*

You can also download a fresh copy of the mmcbase.dll

I know you said the client will spend no more dough, but in the futer, consider diskeeper.

With the help of all you guys I figured it out.

Look for KB907265.

It reinstalls MMC.EXE and a couple of other files.

Everything works, YEEH

Thanks for all your help and I hope this answer helps others.
