Acrobat Reader 7?

Acrobat Reader 7 running on 98 with latest Kernel Update + Unicode libraries (KernelXP).

You know, it's just political. There was no technical difficulties for Adobe.

But it consumes a rather large amount of resources, moar than previous versions.

BTW I think Acrobat 6.xx and newer are too bloated - I prefer 5.x or even 4.x.

ah screw it. I'm going to remove ALL traces of Acrobat reader v4.x/5.x/6.x off ALL my Win9xME machines. will use Foxit Reader 2.0 which loads 3x or even 5x faster than ANY version of Acrobat Reader.

I even installed Foxit Reader 2.0 on an ancient Pentium 100Mhz PC with 80megs of RAM and it loaded in a few seconds. It's much smaller and more simpler than ANY version of Acrobat Reader. just needed a simple PDF viewer in Foxit Reader.

I think you should ask Tihiy on how he got Adobe Acrobat Reader 7 to run on a Win98se machine. email or send him a PM (personal message)

or perhaps Tihiy may want to try making Adobe Acrobat Reader 8.0 run under Win98 SE.

Foxit Reader 2.0 does not run under Win95 (and maybe NT4) as it requires the MSIMG32.DLL file which is not included in Win95.

maybe the previous version 1.3 will work okay under Win95 & WinNT4

You can download Foxit Reader 1.3 build 1621 here. also store a copy of the GDIPLUS.DLL file in the same folder where the Foxit Reader application file is.

Not really, AR7 appears to be faster because it slows down booting by loading most of itself at boot time.

which can be disabled from Adobe Reader 7 options dialog box. I hate it when it loads at startup. try running AR7 without their stuff loaded at bootup time. could be a difference in performance.

Foxit Reader is a nice alternative to Adobe Reader. There's even a Foxit Reader Pro edition (shareware):

I'm going to use the free edition Foxit Reader.

Foxit reader is almost unusable for reading text documents, it has much lower quality of displayed text. It depends on the pdf document itself too, of course.

the reason for lower visual quality is maybe the missing gdiplus.dll in window 98, but this dll can inserted by hand....

I have tested Foxit Reader 1.3 and 2.0, both with and without gdiplus.dll and the image quality and text readability is still very poor, much worse than with Adobe Reader 6.0.

Just try to read this document: http://www.ryston.com/x/foxit/01561329.pdf with Fit Page and Full Screen settings - all the text displayed by Adobe Reader 6.0 can be easily read while the text displayed by Foxit reader not.

Edit: On exit Foxit Reader caused series of GPFs and finally Fatal Exception with blue screen - something that I haven't seen for several months. And corrupted filesystem on all disks. I was sure my last try to use it.

Thought I'd use this topic to mention a supposed future update to version 6.0x of Adobe Reader/Acrobat, after the recent discovery of 'critical' vulnerabilities in versions 7.08 and below:

Adobe is working on an update to versions 6.X of Adobe Reader and Acrobat that will resolve this issue. It is expected to be available in the near future. This Security Bulletin will be updated as soon as the update is available.

"... available in the near future". Now where have I heard that before.
