Quicklaunch Bar Registry Settings

Recommended Posts

I would like to know what the registry settings are for the position and size (number of icons) for the Quicklaunch bar.

I know the contents of the Quicklaunch bar are held in %APPDATA%\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch\

What I want to do is set the position of the Quicklaunch bar to the immediate Right of the ‘Start’ button, and limit it to six icons wide VIA THE REGISTRY.

I’ve had scenarios when the Quicklaunch bar is set to be be extremely wide and appearing on the far-right of the Toolbar, near the Notification Area. This is especially true for existing Roaming Profiles.

I would like to set the position and width of the Quicklaunch bar either by a Group Policy (I could create an ADM file), or my directly setting HKCU in the registry.

What I need is the correct location in the registry.

1. Run RegShot

2. Adjust the size of your Quicklaunch bar

3. Run RegShot again to see the registry changes

4. Run RegShot

5. Move your Quicklaunch bar to the left

6. Run RegShot again to see the registry changes

I downloaded and installed RegShot.

I set up the Quicklaunch bar as a floating window (off the taskbar).

I ran the 1st Shot.

I moved the quicklaunch bar onto the taskbar and positioned it next to the Start Mene button, and made it 6 icons wide.

I ran the 2nd shot.

I then did a compare.

Then only registry entries to change were:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Cryptography\RNG\Seed

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Reliability\LastAliveUptime

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Reliability\LastAliveStamp

None of these entries are related to the position/size of the Quicklaunch Bar.

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Streams\Desktop

This key holds a large string of hex codes which relate to the shortcuts held within the Quicklaunch toolbar (pathnames and so on).

When I move the Quicklaunch toolbar, say from one ode of the Taskbar to theother, none of these hex codes seem to change.

The same is true if I drag the width of the Quicklaunch toolbat to be be, say, 10 icons wide.

What I am after (if it is possible) is the location in the registry of the i) the position of the Quicklaunch toolbar on the desktop; ii) the width of the Quicklaunch toolbar (in number of icons)

So far these two variables seem to be very elusive.

Regards,

Don't you mind losing your OWN time, not talking about search tool users' one ???

You could have already solve your issue by YESTERDAY just by

0- going to the search form

1- typing "Quicklaunch" in the keywords textbox

2- selecting "All Forums" and "Search titles only" in the appropriate controls

3- hiting the search button.

In the result page:

- The FIRST thread is this putain useless poluting thread

- The second is irrelevant to your quest

- The 3rd is a FULL Tutorial about properly setting the quicklaunch tool bar using the registry, including position and size.

Reading it in full you would understand that:

-The 2 settings you're looking for are like the holy grail.

-The key kindly provided by nmX.Memnoch is not what you think it is.

-There is a reason why it does not change in your regshots.

-There are proper ways to make it work.

My back is not as lazy as your front.

BTW, if you don't like the chocolate fire guard, give me your share.

I'm sorry to resurrect a very old thread but I could really do with a method for setting the position of the Quicklaunch bar via Group policy, but I cannot find the information that Djé references. Can anyone help?

Quicklaunch position, etc are stored in 2 keys.

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\StuckRects2]

"Settings"=

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Streams\Desktop]

"TaskbarWinXP"= (or its equivalent for other os's)

Each machine will be different. Also the values need to be modified before user logon (HKCU loads). I use local machine runonce and it works perfect everytime. I've also heard that you need to log on/off twice for it to take effect but I don't recall ever having any luck with that method.

StuckRects2 also affects Start Menu icon size.

All I need to do is automatically set the Quicklaunch toolbar to appear on the right hand side at logon. I realise that the user can then move it, but that is OK. It's an odd request but it is what the client wants.

Can anyone explain what settings are required to be entered into these keys?

Whatever settings are there when you set Quick Launch the way you want it. Every machine will be differnt that's why you need to set it on each machine and then export the keys.

You need this set at every logon in case they move it?
