XP Media Player won't play DVDs...

To the best of my testing knowledge:

In order to use MPlayer as the defualt DVD Player you need a hardware decoder. Mplayer doesn't have the codecs for decrypting DVD's without the hardware decoder.

Since it is a laptop, have you tried WinDVD or PowerDVD?

It's a James Taylor concert. It played in the drive when it was a Win2k system. I even had a copy of Media Player 8 installed and working. Then when I went to use XP, it goofed up. [/quote:b2458bea26]

Not knowing where you are, I'd say it might be a region issue with the DVD. I have a region free Toshiba DVD-ROM that XP wants to force in to Region 1 (US) because of the Hollywood Plus. You could try DVD Genie to unlock the region protection.

The KB's were (not surprisingly) unhelpful.

I thought about region settings and have verified that it's set to region 1. The DVD is reliable as I've used it on many other systems. It's the one I keep in my office for testing DVD drives.

I'm losing my starry-eyed view of the new media player. It seems like there's a lot of crap to go through to get it to do what it's supposed to be made for. Is this Linux or something?
