WinXP Pro-All Services accounted for in a REG file/description

Recommended Posts

Hey All :D

I was looking for a service.reg file where all the services were accounted for. Didn't find one and decided to create one. Now I'm sharing it.

NB: I have enclosed a file for download. It has a .txt extension for easy access. Enjoy! ;)

;------------------------------------------
;One of the bits and pieces you need if you connect to the internet
;using Microsoft's Internet Connection Sharing or Internet Connection Firewall
;

;
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\wuauserv]
"Start"=dword:00000004

;Background Intelligent Transfer Service (Disabled)
;--------------------------------------------------
;
;In theory this should be a useful service, especially since it can
;continue an interrupted download due to a logoff or shutdown situation.
;Unfortunately, it can also be prone to trouble when the resumption occurs.
;
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\BITS]
"Start"=dword:00000004

;ClipBook Service (Disabled)
;---------------------------
;If you're heavy into cutting 'n' pasting random snippets to others on the LAN,

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\ClipSrv]
"Start"=dword:00000004

;COM+ Event System Service (Disabled)
;------------------------------------

;COM+ System Application Service (Disabled)
;------------------------------------------
;Basically, this is the application that controls COM+ Event System.

;
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\COMSysApp]
"Start"=dword:00000004

;Computer Browser Service (Disabled)

very nice list, but must keep in mind dependencies when disabling services..

The 4 services that are SP2 only are:

DCOM Server Process Launcher

HTTP SSL

Network Provisioning Service

Security Center

Windows Firewall/Internet Connection Sharing

would be nice to include those for the people that have SP2.

Wow... that's a really long list...

Just for the record, I wouldn't recommend disabling the DNS Cache service. Like you said, with it disabled, your computer has to query your ISP's DNS server every time you access web material. You end up using more bandwidth and slowing things down.

As for network location awareness, it's not just for ICS. Its the service that "tells" Windows the status of your network connections. If you disable it, you'll end up having a two minute wait until you go from "Acquiring Network Address" to "Connected".

Just my two cents. Thanks for the input though. :)

Good list, does anyone know of something similar and up to date for Windows 2000?

Theres a few sites I used to check ages ago but they're all gone and/or taken over by scumbags now. (one of them is a redirect to astalavista or whatever that site is that instant owns unpatched systems)

  • 2 months later...

disabling dns cache is needed for users who use large HOSTS files.

also, windows still caches DNS queries even with this service disabled.

also, i too have NLA disabled and i never have to wait longer than 5 seconds for my computer to connect and get an ip address.

OMG You just saved me a lot of time for my project!!!

thank you :)

I promise that I will soon put a list for SP3, SP2 + additional services like netframework,...etc. With default, no-lan, no-connections, single gamers - .reg files.

Cheers

Nice list! A few comments...

Workstation can be disabled if the system is not connected to a network.

Windows Image Acquisition can be disabled if you're using devices which came with their own software to download images.

In addition to checking digital signing of drivers, Cryptographic Services is the part of Windows File Protection that automatically replaces protected files when you attempt to delete or rename them. For that reason alone I keep the service disabled!

There is no need to have Logical Disk Manager or Windows Installer set to Automatic. If set to manual, Windows will start the services when they are needed, and stop them when they are no longer needed.

Disabling Windows Management Instrumentation WILL NOT break your system!!! I've been running without it for years...the only thing I notice is that my hard disk is quiet most of the time because it's not collecting useless (to me) performance data and writing them to countless logs!

;Task Scheduler Service (automatic)
;----------------------------------
If you can remember
;every task that needs to be done without help, disable this service.
;
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Schedule]
"Start"=dword:00000004

Do not switch off Task Scheduler. Windows Prefetch needs it to function properly.

;Windows Management Instrumentation Service (automatic)

;------------------------------------------------------

;Provides a common interface and object model to access management information

;about operating system, devices, applications and services.

;If you don't want your computer to work, set this to Disabled.

That's not correct. Windows is still usable without the Windows Management Instrumentation service enabled.

But motherboard voltage and temp monitoring likely won't work.
