So what is the beenfit of 7 over 6.6? Is it really beneficial or is it just another way to repackage something that is essentially the same? It is not like the software will be able to make your burner burn faster or anything.

Well reading the article linked certainly helps ;). Just a section explaining some of the features:

“Nero 7 is the culmination of innovative engineering, end-user requests and demands, and industry direction and convergence,” said Richard Lesser, CEO Nero AG, “We have hit the nail on the head with the addition of Nero Home to Nero 7: users no longer need to be in front of their PCs to view and listen to their media files; they can access their entire libraries in front of the TV.”

In addition, Nero 7 includes a number of enhancements and interface redesigns to familiar and popular Nero applications. Users now have the option of customized installation, meaning they can decide to install or not to install each application courtesy of Windows Installer Technology. To learn more about each of the applications included with Nero 7, visit www.nero.com.

It wont be locked unless critical.

AND.... Having opinions is different from racing around the forums, and posting in every thread possible, with just something, posting for the sake of posting (=post count) than for any REAL reason.

Actually, what _is_ the benefit? Why is Nero trying to compete with software long developed (PowerCinema/MediaHome/WinMCE)? They should be concentrating on the burning-stuff, and finally offer a BurningROM-only package.

Its about playing to your strengths. Outside of the geek-world, most consumers dont use specialised apps for each function.

For example, most consumers are pleased that they can drag & drop MP3 files into nero and come out 5 minutes later with a nice shiny AudioCD. Same goes for Videos too.

So in this case, would you say that Nero having the capability to convert between formats was a negative point?

Same goes, for further functions too. Ultimately, Nero is used by a large number of consumers & the makers KNOW it. So therefore, they want to ensure, that whatever you wanna do, if its related to writing a CD, Nero should figure somewhere in your plans.

And this is not a simple story of bloat. This strategy helps to maintain competitiveness, as in, more ppl are likely to buy Nero, since its a one-stop-shop, for a range of operations. And if that approach of "centralise" helps to simplify what an end-user has to do, then thats a bonus to be reaped.

Of course, some of us power-users want to go in the opposite direction. For which ppl have made tools like NCAB, for stripping out everything!

But there's the problem; it's NOT user-friendly!

Nero Express started out as a great way to make its app user-friendly, but after more than a year it's still too complicated. My dad could use it if I teached him, which wasn't possible before. Worst thing is, Nero Express is the only app that comes close to user-friendliness. Nero Convert, parent-friendly? No. Backup? No. VisionExpress? No. They're adding more, more, and more features to their package, while they should be focussing on improving their others.

... and then they should release a killer-movie-cinema-app. :P

Not having checked out Nero 7 I cannot comment on it. But in Nero 6.6 I have found that the learning curve using StartSmart is very low. And also I only have that one package that includes Burning ROM downloaded from the website and nothing else. StartSmart should be easy enough for most people to navigate through. Heck even my computerphobic girlfriend can burn CDs easy now because of Nero 6.6!! lol
