I've used Trumpet Winsock for ages!!!

I remember using Mosaic. It was really painful having to wait for the pages to load fully, before one could do anything! :puke:
That's why moving on to Netscape was so wonderful! Particularly because all Internet access from Brazil at the time rarely went over 9.6Kb!!! But those were great times, all the same!

Remember those old phone modems?  You put your phone into it before the serial modems.  150 Baud speed.  The jump from 2400 Baud to 14.4K was tremendous then.

Without Netscape I think we would still be bumbling around on Lynx in pure text.  Netscape Navigator was one of the earlier saviors... Then the beast at Microsoft emerged and bundled Internet Explorer which later became Internet Infector. :)

I remember opening certain websites that only liked to use IE.  Then the battle began.  AOL buys Netscape and AIM was the biggest thing since Apple Pie.  I still favor it over Facebook/Twitter.  Compact and efficient and who doesn't love the Buddy List.

The salvation of IE 4.0 was Quick Launch... There couldn't have been a better feature from Windows to the user interface since then.  I miss its native functionality removed from Windows 7 and later.  You can kind of recreate it but it's still not the same with the Clear Desktop Icon moved and I can't seem to put the Recycle Bin icon on using the Pin to Taskbar feature.

Well, @xper is the owner and 1st member of MSFN, so that http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showuser=1 does provide the incept time, from his joining date. :)
There was one big BBS in Brazil, called Mandix. But I got my 1st access when the University I studied in got BITNET, then I moved on to internet, when it arrived here (early 1991). I used PINE for a real long time, before moving on to web-mail, and I used to hang around various groups on the usenet. I heard about FidoNet and compuserve, but not about The Spot.

Microsoft Software Forum Network System Operator and Grand Web Master Xper has graciously confirmed the original birth idea of MSFN took place on August 17th, 2001.  I'll keep the location and the origin of where he came up with it a secret.  I'm not sure if it's common knowledge or intentionally kept hidden.

Sure! MSFN's incept date is Aug 2001. I began networking on BITNET, back in '89. I've lurked about two years before joining MSFN.

Sorry going bit out of topic .

In 89 which browser is used by people?  Does Google exist that time?

Lol I want a time machine to go to the time.

And, to be honest, I also sometimes do. Including fact, that I still have my very first PC, 56K dial-up modem packed somewhere, protocol is still supported by polish provider and the fact that there are still some BBSes over there ran by the passionates, it's sometimes tempting to run this time machine and feel at least the scraps of the spirit of the times.

There are still quitre a few BBS's accessible via Internet/Telnet, if you want to have the feelings of the good ol' times.

No real form of web browser internet in '89.  Maybe Lynx was around on Unix server for text based browser on university.  I only used that around 91-92.  Before I was a BBS SysOp for which used one phone line to connect to your BBS.  Anyone can call and connect to it as long as the line wasn't busy.  Google?  I doubt it was around then.  I think Google is post 2000 era.  Yahoo and Excite was around earlier than Google from what I can recall.  Before that AOL had its own form of internet news.
