It usually does this by inspecting traffic and comparing it to a set of rules to determine if it is allowed or blocked.This process adds to response times, which does technically slow you down in the amount of data you can send and receive, but the amount that it slows you down is so small that you really won't notice it. There is nothing you can do to fix it except not using a firewall, but as I said it’s not something you should worry about. The benefits of the firewall out weigh the small microseconds of response time that you will gain with out a firewall.If you are having problems with a specific firewall slowing down your connection by a large amount of time (several seconds or minutes) then it might be improperly configured or faulty.
