XP Shut down and Restart problem

Frozen

Recommended Posts

This is my first post but this seems to be the most knowlegable place to get my problems fixed.

Ok this problem even occurs during setup. XP will not restart or shut down on its own. It gets to right about where it would restart in normal situations and it just sits there. After installing Windows and I go to restart it saves the settings, the mouse cursor stay on screen for a few seconds it wont move. Then it disappears, my hard drive light shows that there is still activity.

It will just sit there untill I hold the power button down to shut it off or hit the reset button.

I have SP2 installed, I did a fresh install with nLite.

any errors in the event log as to what is locking up

are you doing anything like deleting pagefile on exit or any setting like that?

There are a couple of errors, but I do not know what I would specificly be looking for. Also I am not deleting the pagefile. Thanks for the quick reply.

Could it be a problem with your nLite-made xpsp2 installcd ? Or is it fully functional on other systems ?

It is not nLite, I installed the old fashioned way and and did all the vital non-bloat upgrades, and still cant restart or shut-down without my intervention.

It is also not the pagefile I disabled the page file and it did not help.

Could it be the motherboard shorting on something in the case. When I first built the system I was unable to get it to run properly. Through trouble shooting I took the mobo out of the case and it worked fine. Is it possible that this could be a similar problem, and the mobo is shorting on something again?

I would guess that you have the wiring setup on the wrong polarity. Check the wires going to your reset switch. You may have set the wrong wires to the wrong connections?, or you have the wrong polarity (e.g. + to -, - to +) on the reset switch? Incorrect wiring can easily raise a problem, such as this.

Nope tried both the power and the reset switch with differnt polarities, no go. Still hangs after saving settings.

However, I just noticed something, I installed tweakui and set it to have windows auto-login. It worked the first time. Then it is like it did not save it and now it will no longer auto login.
