98micro ISO

The thing with 98lite is that it is not intended that home-users are going to do unattended installs, let alone of the package + 98lite. Therefore the common licence of 98lite does not support unattended installs.

None the same, one could make an unattended install of windows, 98lite, prehaps through the corporate version of 98lite (which does support this). The thing seems to focus on batch.exe and options.ini, the latter needs to be expanded etwas.

On the other hand, you can run 98lite from the boot disk, and it will 'take over' the install. But to do this, you need to do an _attended_ install, not an unattended one.

:thumbup : There is a new INF based installer available at :

http://www.winimize.com

Here is an excerpt from the home page:

10/11/05 --- New INF Based Installer now available ! No more file lists - this is a true installer, just like the standard Win98 setup.exe, but providing an installation of roughly 18 Meg, including networking capability. The whole setup takes about 10 minutes (!) once the setup directory has been formed.

And this from the min98 page:

Later I will provide instructions for making a boot CD that allows Mindows to be run from a ramdisk.

There is a trick to do that, but you can only choose one version (micro, sleek, chubby etc.), as all the win98 files will be changed to install only one of the 98lite enterprise license version

First boot from floppy disc (assuming you have the latest 98lite on floppy):

* at the A:> dos prompt type "98pro47" this will start the installer up..

* select "install"

* type in your key code to allow the installer to decompress

* use the default path for the files if you want, namely "c:98setup"

..at this point the installer should decompress and dump a few files onto the clean hard disk in the c:98setup folder.

* at the A:> dos prompt type "C:" to change to the C:> dos prompt.

* at the C:> dos prompt type "cd 98setup" to change to the 98setup folder. The dos prompt should now be C:98setup>

* at the C:98SETUP dos prompt type "98lite /cd" [You can pass a switch command to the installation, for older hardware ie: /NM switch - this is passed to the windows setup and means "no minimum", or /NG switch also (no VGA graphics in 98lite) just to lower the burden on the system. or any other switch ] to start 98lite - it should fire up and show you a couple of screens of disclaimers etc and then stop with a menu of options with the first option being "1. Clean Install"

* press the "1" key to choose the clean install

* 98lite will then ask you to insert your win98 CDROM and it will copy all of the windows setup files from the CDROM to the c:98setup folder

* 98lite will then ask if you want to copy the win95 explorer files to the hard disk in case you want to use the MICRO or SLEEK desktop option. This is an optional step - but if you insert your 95 CDROM or tell the installer where the files are (e.g. you may have them on a floppy or another hard disk) the files will also be copied to the C:98setup folder

... at this point you should now have a C:98setup folder that contains:

1. the 98lite program files

2. the win98 installation files, and optionally,

3. the win95 files (explorer.exe v4.00.950, Shell32.dll v4.00.1111 and Comdlg32.dll v4.00.951)

... 98lite is now ready to install windows for you and it will start the process itself - you can also stop here if you want, and make it a bootable CD.

* if you have the original bootable CD for windows 98, use Winiso or other program to make an ISO file, and edit the ISO image, then rename the folder in C: drive from "98setup" to "win98" and replace it into the ISO image (delete the original win98 folder in ISO image). burn the image to Disc.

That's all!

now you have a bootable CD with your 98lite installation.

Thanks so much for the tutorial but I'm running into a problem.

Here's the error I run into right after extracting the 98SE setup files to the hard drive:

"Bad command or file name"

"File Path Mapping Error. Shared installation folders must be mapped to a drive letter. 98lite can not continue."

Please Help!

I've ran into YET another problem. :realmad: I followed the instructions above disregarding the error as (hopefully) it didn't seem to affect anything. When installing the homemade 98micro from cd I get an error trying to extract olepro32.dll from the cd. I have recopied the cab files from another 98SE cd and injected them into the iso but I still recieve the EXACT same error, even when burnt at 24X and using a new asus cd-rom. I'm at the end of my rope. Someon please offer me more details or new suggestions, please. I've been working on this for about a year now and this is the closest I've come.

Thanks for all the help so far, just keep it coming

well the olepro32.dll is the visual basic runtimes,

if u extract the runtimes,, u will see the ole pro dll's

if u copy the dll's straight to your cd and reburn the iso

u will find it find's the ole files without a problem.

What option are you trying to make (micro, sleek, chubby, other)? are you using the free version of 98lite?

kokiri, this is from the 98lite manual:

Manual Installation

-------------------

· from Windows or DOS execute the downloaded archive and extract

the 98lite files to any valid DOS partition on your hard

drive; if you already know that you have or want the Windows

Setup files on your system (typically C:\Windows\Options\CABS)

extract to this directory by entering it in at the 98lite

prompt; default directory is C:\98lite

· copy all the files in the "\Win98" directory ONLY on your

Windows 98 or 98SE CD to your the directory containing 98lite

(do not copy the CHANNELS, OLS, TOUR or CONTENT subdirectories

or their contents)

· if you intend installing 98micro or 98lite with the higher

performance and lighter weight Windows 95 Explorer Shell

desktop option (called the SLEEK desktop option in the

installer) you will also need to copy the following three

Windows 95 files to the setup files directory:

EXPLORER.EXE

SHELL32.DLL

COMDLG32.DLL

These need to come from an original Windows 95 CDROM; 95a, or

95b -- Windows 95c has integrated IE4 so files from 95c are

not compatible. All three files should have version numbers in

the form 4.00.XXXX (NOT 4.72.XXXX or later) in the file

properties dialog

· once the final Setup directory has all files copied to it,

98lite will make a \98lite subdirectory to store the Windows 95

shell and patched files so they will not need to be recopied

or patched again (you may reuse this install directory again

and again to clean reinstall Windows

· If you are not installing or re-configuring multiple systems,

or do not require fast "Shell Swapping" you may safely delete

this 98lite subdirectory and all the files it contains; 98lite

will make it again whenever you install/reinstall the SLEEK

Windows 95 desktop option keeping it saves the extra steps and

makes "Shell Swapping" as a rapidly re-configurable option

Kokiri,

i got some screen shots to show how to start the creation from MS Dos (from within windows 98)

Create a folder named 98 on an empty drive, then extract the files for 98lite to that folder, copy all the files on folder named win98 from the win 98 CD to the folder named 98, then follow as shown below (Click on image to get a larger picture):

98litedosprompt5di.th.png

then after you run 98lite /cd, you'll get this screen:

98litesetting6sp.th.png

new screenshot of enterprise version

setuplite98fa3.th.png

follow intructions, then 98lite will ask you to choose a install type (micro, sleek, chubby, overweight).

after the program configures the windows 98 files you'll get this screen (note the statement: you will not get a choice of desktops when installing from the network or CDROM that means that the type of install you have chosen (micro, sleek chubby or overweight) is the only default install:

readytocopytocdmedia2uh.th.png

And at the same time it tells you that you can copy the files to CD (if you make an ISO image of a bootable win98 CD you can edit it to have the modified files and have a disc that will boot and install on a computer without an OS) i use Winimage and winISO:

makeacdimage7lj.th.png

Hoping that now be easier, to make your own CD.

xplorerUSA,

Thank you so much for the help!

I'm still running into the same problem with olepro32.dll.

Any suggestions besides using the files from another 98se disk or injecting the dll into the iso. Could there be something wrong with the files on the 98lite boot disk.

Please, any ideas would help.

Thanks again

Dear Kokiri,

i can upoad the micro install ISO image, if you want to download it, please PM me.
