Help on 3 tweaks

Recommended Posts

Hi,

Looking for 3 tweaks

1) Hard Disks Drives assignment. I'm using 2 partitioned HDD, each one have 1 main parttion + 3 logical drives. Actually, when i use Windows Explorer i get :

HDD1= C:\, E:\, F:\, G:\

HDD2= D:\, H:\, I:\, J:\

What tweak to get

HDD1= C:\, D:\, E:\, F:\

HDD2= G:\, H:\, I:\, J:\

2) Quick Launch Enabling. I put all the content of the "Quick Launch" toolbar in

$OEM$\$Docs\Default User\Application Data\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch

The problem is that i have to enable it by right-click on "taskbar"/Properties then to check "Show Quick Launch"

3) RunOnceEx wider display (see enclosed image), it is possible?

Yr Hex registry looks like contening all toolbar links! Isn't it???

As i wrote above, I've my personal links inside Quick Launch toolbar, which I copied in $OEM$\$Docs\Default User\Application Data\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch. Then all what i need is enabling it.

The best way I've found is to set quick launch how you want it then

save the key that 2forza showed you in a reg file. And Import that

during the install.

1- not sure but if this is something you set via Administrative Tools > Computer Management (or "%windir%\system32\compmgmt.msc") > Disk Management... then you might somehow try to see if you can find a way to silently call the msc with some kind of argument.

2- as far as the quicklaunch tweak... that's been asked/answered ALOT in several different threads. Take a look at Cartoonite's post here as he has several useful links for this.

3- not really sure what you mean (what enclosed image?)

Tnx all

@spiritpyre:

1) Like you i think it something to do with Administrative Tools/Disks Management.

I did it along time ago and not remember how.

2) TNX for the link. Finally i'll do like jbm+2forza suggestion.

3) Sorry, I added now the enclosed image on my original post (here above)

As far as I know, during the installation windows will first assign drive letters to all primary (main) partitions (on all attached disks) and then all logical partitions. So if you have no primary partitions on the 2nd drive it the easiest, but in any other case you'll need some tools.

With diskmgmt.msc you get the GUI to rearrange your drive letters. There is also a commandline version "diskpart", with which you can change drive letters. But the last one is harder to do. But maybe you could figure a way out to have the drive letters rearranged before the installation is complete. I really have no idea how to figure it out myself (don't have 2 harddisk in one computer).

I use diskpart to assign driveletter Z to my CDROM drive (during the installation).

Here is my batch command (cdrom.cmd), which is started via runonceex.cmd:

@echo off
cd %SYSTEMROOT%\TEMP
diskpart /s diskpart.txt

this is the "diskpart.txt" file

select volume 0
assign letter=z
exit

BTW: I'll change my cdrom driveletter after i've installed apps from cd. Because I don't know what will happen when you do it earlier during installation.

Hi,

@jjvs: I'm interested by yr diskpart suggestion for another problem i have.

During the WinXP there are 2 restarts. 1st after copiying files from CD to the HD and the 2nd after Windows installation.

Then after the windows installation, my CD is NOT detected and i have error message: "'Windows No Disk' 'There is no disk in the drive. Please insert a disk into drive' [Cancel] [Try Again] [Continue]"

Using diskpart and diskpart.txt, how the system know that the cdrom (and not a hard disk) is assigned to z? Is there any documentation about diskpart?

Cheers

Hi coucou,

You can find a description of diskpart on the microsoft site:

Microsoft Windows XP - Diskpart

it's much more detailed there than what the help from the command gives you.

I'm not very much into diskpart myself. But I've figured this out. At least it works for me. And to be fair, I haven't tested it on another computer. So I don't know if all cd/dvd drives get the same "volume nr" assigned on different computers.

I also think, I forgot something in my last post. This is my cdrom.cmd entry within

runonceex.cmd.

REG ADD %KEY%\925 /VE /D "Assign driveletter Z to CD/DVD drive" /f
REG ADD %KEY%\925 /v 1 /D "%SYSTEMROOT%\TEMP\cdrom.cmd" /f

I hope you can do something with it.

1) Try these links:

How drive letters are assigned to partitions

And

How to change drive letters using Windows-tools (diskmgmt.msc)

(You might have to temporarily change them to some other unused letters first, in order to be able to reassign them as you like.)

I prefer setting them before installation using the first method and Partition Magic (doing this on a drive containing data can cause data loss or unability to boot if you're unlucky).

2)As others have said before: Set it as you want it and export the reg-key.

As always: Try searching the forums and the web before asking questions!

just out of curiousity was (#1) for a one-time problem or something you wanted to dynamically setup on a given machine whenever you use your ua cd?

also a very very cheap way (if it even works) to make the RunOnceEx dialog wider that you might try is making a longer text string (in the case that this does actually work, you may even be able to get away with padding the end of a string with lots of spaces). But as far as a reg-tweak for its dimensions; I have no idea if something like that would even exist or if the RunOnce GUI mioght adjust its dimensions dynamically at runtime to fit the text strings (kinda how I thought of the above).

i.e. (RunOnceEx.cmd):

REG ADD %KEY%\001 /VE /D "Preparing Installation... {lots of spaces OR a long phrase or something}" /f

TNX all for yr help

@DL:

You're right. This i do search without success. In fact my problem is not assigning drives. As i wrote above, After the WinXP install then restart my cdrom is not detected and i got an error: "'Windows No Disk' 'There is no disk in the drive." Although i add this in my .cmd file
cmdow @ /HID
@echo off
FOR %%d IN (c: d: e: f: g: h: i: j: k: l: m: n: o: p: q: r: s: t: u: v: w: x: y: z:) DO IF EXIST %%d\WIN51 SET CDROM=%%d

I think, maybe i should use drive assignement.

Have you any suggestion for CD detection problem???

Yes, in case of 2 HDD installed.

Regarding RunOnceEx, i don't use it directly (i've no more RunOnceEx.cmd). I'm using WPI which include it anyway. My problem stay entire!

never used wpi (i guess i like doing things the hard way lol) but my best guess is that it just autmoates the tasks that used to be under RunOnceEx.cmd (aka it still uses "RunOnceEx" the registry key).

So if you dug up an old RunOnceEx.cmd (or used the one @ unattended.msfn.org) and made a .reg file that alters the right text string under "RunOnceEx" the registry key like I said in my last post, then find a way of overwriting wpi's reg entry (maybe cmdlines.txt? or perhaps theres a way to apply the reg file from wpi or even change its string w/o the .reg) sorry if I'm not helping but there's a few ideas that might be workable (dunno).
