Hi, i have HP pavilion ze5400 with on-board wireless NIC card 802.11g. connected to a linksys router 802.11b. it has been working fine for the last 2 years but all of the sudden, i noticed slow connection.. sometimes it takes for ever to open a webpage, so i pingged the router "ping 192.168.2.1 -t" , the result is not good.. here is a sample of what i get

I ran windows update for the wireless NIC card, didn't find anything..

I have the lasted firmware on the router.

i tried so many things but didn't work, i even used the recovery CDs that came with the laptop... that didn't help.

I even changed the router... i have Dell TrueMobile 1184...

I'm using WEP, SSID Broadcast is disabled.

i have another Laptop that it is almost identical to mine...it is ze5200 and it is working fine.

and while i'm typing this post... the first time it let me post it.. the second time i had to add to the post but it kept timing out... so i had to connect to the router throught RJ45 :realmad:

Any help please...

Thanks in advance

Is the wireless in the laptop built in or a pcm card / USB?How old is the machine? How old is the card.

Is the router 11b or g? If b is the card backwards compatable to 11b standard? Usually they are, and usually auto cofig....but not laways. You say you have another laptop that works fine is that b or g? Are you trying to use both standards at once between the different machines and router?

The fact the ping is taking so long and timing out would indicate general connectivity issues perhaps to do with signal strength. XP if thats what you are using has an inbuilt site monitor / strength bar, if not present you can download a free version from just about any wireless supplier. What is the signal strength reading, strong, weak, intermittent etc. Might want to try changing the channels on the Dell to see if signal strenght improves.....

Are there any restrictions / filtering on the router. Is there any firewall software loaded locally interfereing.

Double check using ipconfig /all that the laptop is recieving the correct settings for DNS, DHCP, IP and in particular default gateway, though in truth as you are able to get web pages on occaisions I suspect these are ok. Perform the ipconfig /release and then ipconfig /renew to ensure functionality.

Diable any 1394 and ethernet connections.

Of course it could just be a failing NIC.....

Hi Download Kid,

Thanks for your reply.

these are the answers for your questions.

Q

- Is the wireless in the laptop built in or a pcm card / USB?How old is the machine? How old is the card.

A

-it is built in. the machine is 2 years old. Intel 2.8 GHZ, 512 DDR. 802.11G wireless NIC Card

Q

Is the router 11b or g?

the router is Linksys 8.2.11b

Q

Are you trying to use both standards at once between the different machines and router?

A

the other laptop is 802.11b. mine is 802.11g, i don't think that will effect the connection becuase my laptop NIC's Properties can go from 8.2.11g to 802.11b automatically.

Q

What is the signal strength reading, strong, weak, intermittent etc

A

The signal is Excelent

Q

Might want to try changing the channels on the Dell to see if signal strenght improves

A

i tried to change the channel on both the Linksys and the Dell, and it still giving me the Request timed out"

Q

Are there any restrictions / filtering on the router. Is there any firewall software loaded locally interfereing.

A

I have WEP running and the SSID is disabled for broadcast, windows firewall is enabled (SP2)

Q

Double check using ipconfig /all that the laptop is recieving the correct settings for DNS, DHCP, IP and in particular default gateway, though in truth as you are able to get web pages on occaisions I suspect these are ok. Perform the ipconfig /release and then ipconfig /renew to ensure functionality.

A

I checked them, nothing is wrong with them. disbled and enabled the NIC alot of time in order to relase and renew the IP address.. still no luck.

Q

Diable any 1394 and ethernet connections.

A

Disabled everything except the Wireless NIC and it still giving me the request timed out...

Any help please

It sounds like the Wireless NIC might have developed a problem, but it's worth trying to enable SSID in the first instance - sometimes this can cause problems (but then it worked before). Or do without WEP just for testing.

The other thing I'd try is to use wired connection to the router and see what happens - this would narrow things down a bit.
