98 FE + 98 SE + ME updates + patches + (hot)fixes

Recommended Posts

Well, I've been running the MSXML 4 SP2 update MS08-069 (Q954430) and for the first time since MS06-071 (Q927978), MSXML 4 appears to be behaving itself... See original post here.

I could not get the couple of updates since 927978 to work on my 98SE...

This latest one is a goodie!

I've yet to test out a few of the recent updates... But I'll get around to it.

Great work MDGx :)

Oh, BTW, I tested MSXML 3 SP10 (MS08-069 955069)... It does not work like it's previous SP9 update...

Just crashes applications and services with application errors...

There's a newer GDI+ security update 938464 (MS08-052 954593) with gdiplus.dll version 5.1.3102.5581 for Windows XP SP3.

Seems to work fine in 9x.

I find that if I copy the new gdiplus.dll file to Windows\System and then delete all other copies from Program Files and Windows, then I only have the lastest security update version.

It saves installing many updates for many pieces of software.

MDGx will need to revise his unofficial Daylight Saving Time / Time Zone updates.

Microsoft has just posted the 955839 December 2008 Cumulative Time Zone Updates in MS KB article 955839.

I will delay the upcoming releases of my unofficial service packs for Win98fe and Win95 osr2 until MDGx offers the unofficial 955839 TZ/DST updates for Win9x/ME/2000/NT4 on his site.

Also posted are the Cumulative Internet Explorer KB958215 (MS08-073) security updates. I'll wait for unofficial 958215 IE6 SP1 (W98MENT4) patch.

Root Certificates Update revised as well. File size is now 293kb with a Digital Signature date of Nov. 3, 2008.

MSXML 3 security updates from MS07-042 and beyond are no longer compatible with Win9XMENT4 systems, RetroOS. They only work with Win2k and above. Last one functional under 9x & NT4 are the MSXML 3 KB924191 (MS06-061) security patches.

I'm not sure about this timezone update... I've had a weird behavior on my machine where the time would change due to DST earlier than it should, so I manually fixed it and after a week or two it got changed again!

Dunno what to look for and where (I'd appreciate some pointers), but I have a hunch there may be leftovers from previous updates that trigger DST changes. I've had about 4-5 such timezone updates installed recently.

Another issue is with Root Certificates Update: it invalidates all manually installed certificates that were previously found on the system. Is it supposed to do that or is it a bug? I have manually installed a couple of certificates that allow me to access a private SVN repository and they were invalidated by such root certificates update.

Link to Revolutions pack 7.11 topic is no longer working. Direct download link to the RP 7.11 pack still works.

Happy New Year 2009, everyone!

@ erpdude8 when you have time can you update your MP9URP9X with the new strmdll.dll?

sure thing, PROBLEMCHYLD, when I post up the January 2009 releases of the unofficial WMP9 URP packs sometime in middle or late January 2009.

which version of the Root Certificates Update did you install, Drugwash? Did the problem occur with the recently revised edition with Digital Signature date of November 3, 2008?

Uh make that early February 2009, PROBLEMCHYLD. I recently lost the SED files for creating the WMP9 URP packs when upgrading my room PC from XP SP3 Home Ed. to XP SP3 Pro Ed. I'll have to re-create them later this month since I'm very busy right now.

No, the latest I have installed is the October 23, 2008 one as available from MDGx' update on December 1st, 2008 (at the time of the above posting).

If the certificates that were manually installed were very old or have old expired dates, then installing the latest Root Certificates Update is supposed to do that. As Microsoft would say, the behavior is "by design"

Mdgx, I wonder if you heard about the UDMA.SYS driver for DOS? Do Google searches on it. Loading this driver adds UltraDMA support for hard drives that support UDMA and may boost performance. Works best on large hard drives.

Also look for the di1000dd.sys driver; that one seems to be a universal mass storage driver for DOS. Part of the "motto hairu" usb driver package. I may start customizing my Win9x boot disks to include the udma.sys, usbaspi.sys & di1000dd.sys driver files.

Undocumented switch for USBASPI.SYS > /E (scans for EHCI USB interface when using USB 2.0), use only with new versions of USBASPI.SYS

Java:

http://www.mdgx.com/add.htm#JAVA

New releases:

* Sun Java Runtime Environment Standard Edition 32-bit includes: Java Virtual Machine (JVM) + Java Applets Plug-ins and Microsoft, Mozilla, Firefox, Netscape + Opera 32-bit web browsers (multilingual):

http://java.sun.com/

- Java Standard Edition (Java SE) 6.0 Update 11 for Windows 98 SE/ME:

http://java.sun.com/javase/6/

Direct download [15.4 MB]:

http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/

Ignore "Warning: This is not a supported Operating System!" error message!

Install requires Microsoft .Net Framework Redistributable (NFR) 1.1 or newer (free):

http://www.mdgx.com/add.htm#NFR

FIX: Run Java SE 6.0 install executable -> stop at "Welcome to Java" screen -> open Windows Explorer or File Manager -> browse to %windir%\TEMP [default is C:\WINDOWS\TEMP = see your C:\AUTOEXEC.BAT or C:\CONFIG.SYS SET TEMP line for exact location if different than default (Win95/98/ME) or your TEMP environment variable (WinNT4/2000/XP/2003/Vista/2008)] -> run .MSI installer!

...

Doesn't work...

The listed method of installing Java 6 Update 11 gives the same failure message as if trying to continue with the installer.

I don't think anyone has so far got Java 6 Update 10 or 11 working in 9x :(
