@MDGx 2:

Are you sure that Microsoft Windows 98 SP1 Year 2000 (Y2K) Updates are only for win 98 sp1 and not also for win 98 se?

I'll upload the files you posted soon.

I'm sure, Win98 SE already contains those Y2K updates.

BTW:

I've looked inside SHELLME.EXE ITA you made:

You need to translate this INF text string into Italian:

Remove Unofficial Explorer Lockups SHELL32.DLL Fix

HTH

No Problem, usually I don't translate these strings, you can continue.

MDGx, you sent me email on Monday Feb. 19 mentioning about an updated SHELL32.DLL fix for Win98:

Anonymous author's SHELL98.EXE [sHELL32.DLL build 468]for 98 SE was

updated to fix Restorator hex editor + CRC errors for those who wish

to translate it into languages other than English:

http://www.mdgx.com/web.htm#9SU

http://www.mdgx.com/files/SHELL98.EXE

the link to Shell98.exe has shell32.dll build 634!!! was it a typo??

If the shell32.dll was revised recently, it SHOULD NOT BE RELEASED as version 4.72.3812.634. Give it a different build number like 635 or higher. Do NOT confuse Win98 users this way.

If I am going to include this recent shell32.dll file in the next release of the 98fe SP, I'm changing the build number of the DLL file to 635.

The current 98fe SP thread has been closed for a few weeks. new releases of the 98fe SP will be mentioned here until I create a new thread for the 98fe SP.

from first post:

All mdgx.com fixes/patches/updates that were rebooting automatically (unattended) at the end of install now prompt for reboot/restart [ Yes / No ], *unless* the ADVPACK.DLL setup APIs decide otherwise [independent of custom INF / SED settings = only 1 or 2 patches do this], because certain fixes must reboot unconditionally to properly complete install.

EXCEPTIONS:

- U891711.EXE

- U918547.EXE [obsolete] = replaced by ME918547.EXE [WinME] + Q918547.EXE [Win98 SE].

Both fixes above must reboot unconditionally *twice* to properly complete install.

Qs:

1) i never noticed the 'must reboot twice' notice for the Q918547.EXE update --- i've only got it rebooting once at the moment, but the user will invariably end up rebooting again anyway during the Auto-Patcher process --- my question is: is this sufficient, or should I force another reboot before continuing with any other updates -- this is easily done but i'd prefer not to if not necessary

2) do i need to update any of your hotfixes that have been changed as per above (added prompt for restart) for the needs of AP? I wouldn't think so as the unattended switches all seem to work, I just thought i'd ask ... maybe its good to update them anyway just in case people want to use the AP hotfix collection outside of AP ... you wouldn't happen to have a full list of which hotfixes you adjusted by any chance?

cheers, and thanks for keeping an eye on the complete updates list...champion effort!

Sop.

1. No, this "reboot twice" thing applies only to the 2 "U" updates above [u891711.EXE + U918547.EXE], not to ME918547 or Q918547.

BTW:

I've just updated these 2 [to make sure they won't reboot automatically by any means at end of install], please download them again:

ME:

http://www.mdgx.com/files/ME918547.EXE

98 SE:

http://www.mdgx.com/files/Q918547.EXE

2. From what I recall at the moment, all updates should prompt for reboot [if necessary], except the 2 above [u891711.EXE + U918547.EXE].

Unfortunately I modified most updates [to make sure they don't reboot] thoroughout a few months time period, and did not keep such a list. ;(

But if you notice any that still do reboot automatically without prompting, please let me know.

* Unofficial Windows 98/98 SP1/98 SE/ME SETUPAPI.DLL 5.1.2600.2180 Update [442 KB]:

http://www.mdgx.com/files/SETUPAPI.EXE

This patch breaks NUSB 2.4 and 3.0. With updated file, when I clicked on the NUSB icon in the system tray, it did not respond. When I restored the original setupapi.dll everything worked fine.

i thought it a bit strange the file version was going backwards :rolleyes: but, as always, we can't thank you enough for all your work for the W98 community here at MSFN :thumbup

Unofficial Windows 98/98 SP1/98 SE/ME SETUPAPI.DLL 5.1.2600.2180 Update [442 KB]:

This patch breaks NUSB 2.4 and 3.0. With updated file, when I clicked on the NUSB icon in the system tray, it did not respond. When I restored the original setupapi.dll everything worked fine.

Thanks for your feedback.

I've added uninstall + restore in case NUSB doesn't work:

SETUPAPI:

http://www.mdgx.com/web.htm#MEU

and:

http://www.mdgx.com/web.htm#9SU

Added uninstall in case newer SETUPAPI.DLL doesn't work with NUSB:

* Unofficial Windows 98/98 SP1/98 SE/ME SETUPAPI.DLL 5.1.2600.2180 Update [442 KB]:

http://www.mdgx.com/files/SETUPAPI.EXE

BUG: SETUPAPI.DLL 5.1.2600.2180 does NOT work properly with NUSB:

http://www.mdgx.com/web.htm#NUS

FIX: Restore original SETUPAPI.DLL backed up as SETUPAPI.ORI by SETUPAPI.EXE:

Start button -> Settings -> Control Panel -> Add/Remove Programs -> select "Restore Original SETUPAPI.DLL" -> click Add/Remove button.

Actually, I've tried the SanDisk 2 GB Cruzer USB stick again, and works 100% with the new SETUPAPI.DLL and NUSB 3.0.

Weird?

OLE:

http://www.mdgx.com/add.htm#OLE

Added OLEDLG.DLL 5.0.2195.7114 from Win2000 SP4 Q926436 security fix:

* Unofficial Windows 98/98 SP1/98 SE/ME OLE Automation Libraries (DLLs) 2.40.4528 OLEAUT32.DLL, OLEDLG.DLL, OLEPRO32.DLL + STDOLE2.TLB Update:

http://support.microsoft.com/?id=259403

Direct download [512 KB]:

http://www.mdgx.com/files/OLEUP.EXE

Please, remove OLEDLG.DLL version 5.00.2195.7114 from the Unofficial OLE Automation Update, MDGx. I DID find a problem with it and that it breaks the ability to insert OLE objects into documents when using Wordpad and/or ALL MS Office apps like Word/Excel/Powerpoint and third party apps on Windows 9x/ME/NT4 OSes.

To reproduce this problem, open Wordpad (or MS Word or Corel WordPerfect), click on Insert and click on Object. It will do NOTHING when it is supposed to display the Insert Object dialog box.

After I restored the OLEDLG.DLL file with the original one (either the Win98se or WinME version) the Insert Object dialog box will appear after clicking on Insert, then choosing Object.

Is the Root Certificates Update good for IE5x on Win95 (OSR2)?

Here in this thread it's specified as being for IE5/6/7 on 98/98 SP1/98 SE/ME, and on MDGx's site for 98 and upwards, while erpdude's site specifies the previous update as being for 9x, 2000, ME & NT4.

The crucial component is that a version of IE 5/6/7 is present, so that the update should be OK for IE5x on Win95. Is that right?

(Thanks)
