98 FE + 98 SE + ME updates + patches + (hot)fixes

Recommended Posts

Even if it does, it won't fix the problem. You need the pngfilt.dll from IE7 for a fix.

the_guy

Will the one from IE 7 work on Win98SE?

It has two unresolved dependencies with MSVCRT.DLL 6.0.9782.0.

Still investigating....Suggest you do the same....

NO, it won't work. You can make it run on 9x, but it won't make difference, because problem in mshtml. :o

No unresolved dependencies with MSVCRT.DLL 6.1.9847.0, however PNGFILT.DLL wouldn't register. "A device attached to your system is not functioning." I updated my system with the latest files from MESP202B7. I got the same error with WSHOM.OCX. They won't crash your system, or anything, but I'm guessing that we probably shouldn't use either one with SE.

The IE922760 does not install on my win98se+IE 6.00.2800.1106IS, says that I don't have the correct IE version? The first version that you posted here installed fine. Should I uninstall this version first before installing your latest with the added reg. values?

The problem is with the package on MDGx site, the check for files is broken, it is

"*._p"

And also this section of the INF files (both GDR and QFE) was not updated, the correct content is:

Compversion		 = 28001895
Compid = Q922760
CatalogFile = Q922760.cat
IEVersion = 6.0.2800.1106
Version = "6,0,2800,1895"
Guid = {7d16667b-0ff7-4c6b-9fcf-775578e89cc2}

And what means this added code?

HKCR,"CLSID\{9BA05972-F6A8-11CF-A442-00A0C90A8F39}",,,"Window List in Shell Process"
HKCR,"CLSID\{9BA05972-F6A8-11CF-A442-00A0C90A8F39}\InProcServer32",,0x00020000,"%11%\SHDOCVW.DLL"

HKLM,"Software\Microsoft\Active Setup\Installed Components\%GUID%",ComponentID,,"%COMPID%"
HKLM,"Software\Microsoft\Active Setup\Installed Components\%GUID%",PackageVersion,0x00010001,3

It is not part of any original INFs?

noguru:

I have fixed the installer.

Please download it again [3.61 MB]:

http://www.mdgx.com/files/IE922760.EXE

Should work ok now.

Thanks.

Petr:

Thanks for noticing the buggy code.

I have fixed the INF + SED code.

Notes:

- Under the [FileSectionList] section = corrected version strings.

Although it installed ok on my Win98 SE computer the 1st time.

- Under the [FileSectionList] section = I've renamed %Warn2% to %IEWarn% and also renamed correspondent item IEWarn= under the [strings] section.

- _sfx_manifest_ file = I have modified it to adapt it to 9x MSPATCHA.DLL / IEUPDATE.EXE usage, original was for NTx OSes with different file names specific to Win2000. Also removed the [Verify] section code to force it to install the newer QFE versions no matter if code verification matches or not.

- I found the reg keys for "CLSID\{9BA05972-F6A8-11CF-A442-00A0C90A8F39}",,,"Window List in Shell Process" inside the original INFs from Win2000 SP4 patch.

- I have removed the "Active Setup\Installed Components\%GUID%" reg keys from the [user.AddReg] section, and moved them under the [Actsetup.Reg] section, where they should be.

@Petr: The first three lines of your registry code should be removed. The last 5 lines, though, should not be.

What needs to be changed in all the .inf files:

DELETE (ALL):
HKCR,"CLSID\{9BA05972-F6A8-11CF-A442-00A0C90A8F39}",,,"Window List in Shell Process"
HKCR,"CLSID\{9BA05972-F6A8-11CF-A442-00A0C90A8F39}\InProcServer32",,0x00020000,"%11%\SHDOCVW.DLL"
HKCR,"CLSID\{9BA05972-F6A8-11CF-A442-00A0C90A8F39}\InProcServer32",ThreadingModel,,Apartment

CHANGE (ONLY IN NT INF's):
HKLM,"Software\Microsoft\Active Setup\Installed Components\%GUID%",PackageVersion,0x00010001,3 (3->1)

ADD (ONLY IN 9X INF's):
HKLM,"Software\Microsoft\Active Setup\Installed Components\%GUID%",,,"%COMPID%"
HKLM,"Software\Microsoft\Active Setup\Installed Components\%GUID%",IsInstalled,0x10001,01,00,00,00
HKLM,"Software\Microsoft\Active Setup\Installed Components\%GUID%",Version,,"%VERSION%"
HKLM,"Software\Microsoft\Active Setup\Installed Components\%GUID%",ComponentID,,"%COMPID%"
HKLM,"Software\Microsoft\Active Setup\Installed Components\%GUID%",PackageVersion,0x00010001,1

That looks like all that needs to be done.

BTW, KB923789 fix contains Flash Player 6.0.88.

(It replaces KB913433 with Flash Player 6.0.84)

I have no idea if there are also updated versions 7 and 8.

Petr

The KB923789 security update installs Flash Player ActiveX control v6.0.88 which should fix the security problems mentioned in this Adobe Security Bulletin (even though APSB06-11 does not mention Flash Player 6):

http://www.adobe.com/support/security/bull.../apsb06-11.html

and in Microsoft security bulletin MS06-069:

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/...n/ms06-069.mspx

Flash Player 9.0.28 fixes security problems mentioned in this Adobe Security Bulletin:

http://www.adobe.com/support/security/bull.../apsb06-18.html

Adobe says there that Flash Player 7 & 8 are affected but have not released updated versions of Flash Player 7 & 8 to fix the problems in security bulletin APSB06-18.

* Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.0 SP1 for Windows 98/98 SP1/98 SE/ME MSInfo32 Errors IEINFO5.OCX 5.50.4918.1900 Fix:

http://support.microsoft.com/?id=322656

Direct download [138 KB]:

http://www.mdgx.com/files/Q322656.EXE

The Q322656 IEINFO5.OCX file should strictly be used under Windows 2000 only. The IEINFO5.OCX v5.50.4918.1900 Fix does NOT work correctly under Win98/ME/NT4 and it will break some of Internet Explorer's "System Information" details when running MSINFO32 under Win98/ME. make a note of this.
