98 FE + 98 SE + ME updates + patches + (hot)fixes

OLEAUT 4522 finally no good for me :

I hadn't used eMule since quite a long time and a few days ago I tried to use it again and to my surprise it systematically froze the entire OS (including mouse and keyboard) after about 5-10 minutes of use, forcing to reboot the PC using the power button.

I did downgrade several recently updated sytstem files in use by eMule to finally find out that the culprit was OLEAUT 4522. I did downgrade to version 4275.1 from VB6.0-KB290887-X86 to clear out the problem. This also apparently cleared a non terminal BSOD during boot that I was attributing so far to some vxd.

you might also want to try upgrading emule to the latest release, eidenk. OLE automation files build 4518 were first included in the original release of IE 6.

MDGx,

Petr sent me the Q268452, Q301540 and Q304708 ME hotfixes. let me know if you need them.

Please forgive my above posts but the problem still occurs. I have been able to run emule for several hours, then I went to sleep with eMule on and when I woke up the OS was frozen again. And at reboot the BSOD was here again. Apologies for jumping too fast to conclusions here but I was too happy to have it running again.

About OLEAUT32.DLL 2.40.4522:

I've been using it for at least a year, and I've tried tons of programs, tools, games etc in 98 SE. Works ok so far.

BTW:

I just installed eMule 0.46c [newest version available at http://www.emule-project.net/].

Works ok.

I'm using:

ASYCFILT.DLL 2.40.4526

OLEAUT32.DLL 2.40.4522

OLEPRO32.DLL 5.0.4526

STDOLE2.TLB 2.40.4526

which are installed by running [newest versions from Win2000 Q886765 hotfix]:

http://www.mdgx.com/files/OLEUP.EXE

found here:

http://www.mdgx.com/add.htm#OLE

together with other older OLE Updates.

Note:

OLEAUT32.DLL 2.40.4526 is the only file that doesn't work properly with any 9x/ME or NT4 OSes.

Hope this helps.

Hi MDGx,

I am bafled by this eMule error, it's several days I am after fixing that. Would you mind to send me a list of the module versions in use by eMule on your system so that I can compare it to mine.

Nirsoft's Current Process utility allows to do this in a few seconds and clicks : Select the eMule process, then jump in the lower pane. Right-click to select all modules, then save as text.

Thanks much if you can. Here is my email : eidenk@ntlworld.com

-eidenk: I have 2 win98se puters occasionally running latest emule (first installed 2 wks ago), sometimes for days on end, and no freezes/crashes... I have read in emule/p2p forums that emule can freeze if it has network problems with # of TCP connections or bandwidth issues, usually if you're behind a router (I've had net probs behind router with p2p, but no freezes or crashes, just not able to surf, or Vonage VOIP gets choppy... found out that win98 sometimes has probs with more than 60 ("half-open"?) TCP connections; after reducing mine to <50, no more probs here.... just a thought... ;)

Before installing WinME Q321635 hotfix, install Q305826 hotfix first. When I installed the WinME Q305826 patch on my ME machine, it removed the hard drive "spin-down" feature when attempting to put the PC on either standby or hibernation. Installing Q321635 on top of Q305826 or Q302103 restored the HD spin-down feature.

minor correction: version 2.40.4526 of the oleaut32.dll file will not work properly under Win95, 98, ME and NT4.

see if Petr sent you the Q278368 patch for ME.

Off topic eMule.

I finally sorted the problem by starting from scratch with eMule again and it's now on since 24 hours. No file versions problems at all. My BSOD was due to missing vnbt.386 from TCP/IP but that wasn't the problem either as my old eMule installation was still freezing the OS after fixing that.

Thanks all for your feedback.

sure MDGx. Also you can remove the OLE update 4522 for ME. I tested the OLE update 4526 on my ME system [with oleaut32.dll file build 4522, others build 4526] and it worked ok. so OLE update 4526 should work for ME as well.

Hi erpdude, didn't you just post again recently, in an answer to a question by Petr in the MESP thread, that 4526 breaks PC Health on ME ? :

NO PETR! OLE update 4526 (KB886765) is NOT OK under WinME. It broke the Help and Support Center program included in ME.

Guys,

Let's make this clear once and for all:

OLEAUT32.DLL 2.40.4526 from Win2000 Q886765 hotfix [memory leak fix]:

http://www.mdgx.com/add.htm#OLE

is the ONLY file from OLE 2.40.4526 update above that does NOT work properly with ANY 95/98/ME/NT4 OSes.

ALL other 3 files from Q885765 above DO work properly with ALL 95/98/ME/NT4 OSes:

ASYCFILT.DLL 2.40.4526

OLEPRO32.DLL 5.0.4526

STDOLE2.TLB 2.40.4526

Therefore OLDER OLEAUT32.DLL 2.40.4522 from Win2000 SP4 MUST be used instead.

OLEAUT32.DLL 2.40.4522 DOES work properly with ALL 95/98/ME/NT4 OSes.

Therefore Unofficial OLE Update build 2.40.4526 [OLEUP.EXE] from:

http://www.mdgx.com/add.htm#OLE

can be installed on ANY 95/98/ME/NT4 OS without ANY problems so far.

OLEUP.EXE above installs all these 4 files:

ASYCFILT.DLL 2.40.4526

OLEAUT32.DLL 2.40.4522

OLEPRO32.DLL 5.0.4526

STDOLE2.TLB 2.40.4526

Hope this helps.

FIXED OLEUP.EXE = reverted back to older OLEAUT32.DLL 2.40.4522 from Win2000 SP4 = if already installed OLEAUT32.DLL 2.40.4526 follow instructions on screen to properly overwrite the newer one with older OLEAUT32.DLL 2.40.4522 :

* Unofficial OLE Update build 2.40.4526 for Windows 95/98/NT4/ME [446 KB, English]:

http://www.mdgx.com/files/OLEUP.EXE

...

Your OLE Automation Update needs to be revised again, MDGx. WinME users should revert back to OLE Automation v2.40.4522 files, ALL of them as v2.40.4526 of the files break ME's Help & Support Center feature. Helpctr in WinME will display a "cannot display page" error message when using v2.40.4526 of asycfilt.dll, oleaut32.dll, olepro32.dll & stdole2.tlb files as I've recently used those files and tested them on my ME machine. Perhaps you may want to create a separate WinME OLE package (2.40.4522) that installs under ME only (like OLEUPWME.EXE). ALL of the OLE Automation files from the KB886765 patch should work properly under Win2k with SP4 installed; Microsoft forgot to mention in support KB article 886765 that the OLE patch requires SP4 to be installed first.

however, when I installed the OLE Automation v2.40.4526 fix (including v2.40.4526 of the oleaut32.dll file) under my neighbor's Win98 SE system, things seem to run fine [everything loaded ok]. what was the problem with the oleaut32.dll file? and can you create an OLE automation v2.40.4526 pack that installs under Win95/98/NT4 only? it's just that the OLE Automation 2.40.4526 files loaded ok under WinME but the Help & Support feature stopped working correctly, so I had to switch back to v2.40.4522 of all the OLE Automation files for WinME Help & Support Center to function correctly again.

If I've been asking it is because I recalled the above post.
