Hello,

To use XP w/out having to activate [WPA], do what I did:

1. buy legitimate copy of XP Home, Pro or OEM [OEM is Pro but much cheaper and is bundled with PC hardware]

or get MSDN subscription CD [kinda expensive if u don't own or work for a computer/IT related business] with VLK edition [if u do, then skip step 2].

2. get corpfiles + keygen [don't ask... go google].

3. create unattend.txt [a.k.a. winnt.sif] + tweaks scripts:

4. burn XP boot CD/DVD with SP2 + all current hotfixes slipstreamed + unattended/tweak scripts + apps/tools:

5. install away. ;)

This is NOT meant to encourage piracy. I hate piracy.

As long as u own a *genuine* XP license, whatever u do with it on *your* personal computer is strictly your own business, and well within legal boundaries.

Two questions:

1. I have already installed and activated my XPSP2. Is it possible to change key to corporate one without reinstalling entire OS?

2. What if MS genuine OS validation will block some features of XP with "wrong" corporate keys?

1. Not to my knowledge, unless u have the time to allow keygen generate keys that are not on the SP2 no-no list.

2. MS built a detection mechanism into SP2, which will not allow to install on PCs with most used corp keys, so if/when u install SP2, u need to have a key that's not on their no-no list [see 1 above].

I've tried to avoid genuine validation as much as I could, because of the same reason why I hacked my XP OS in the 1st place:

I believe that paying money for the XP CD, gives me the right to install and use the OS on my own PC as I see fit, without having to go to extra trouble and "activate" it. I am also one of those people who like to upgrade their PCs quite frequently, which means that normally I would have to reactivate every 5-6 months or so, whenever 3 of my hardware devices [mobo/BIOS, CPU, HD, video controller, NIC card/modem, etc] will "look" different to the OS.

And I don't like that, and please tell me if you know anybody who does?

I legally own every OS MS made since 1992 [my 1st were DOS 5.0 + Windows 3.0], but never had to do anything like this, and I'm not going to start now.

I've already "trial" installed a couple of Linux distros, because MS now has built activation into all their current + future OSes and business software [Office].

I also do respect everybody's privacy, but I also expect in return everybody to respect mine, and I'm not going to play games every 4-6 months whenever I buy a few new PC parts.

The same time I do hate piracy, and I understand perfectly the need to thwart it [i never installed an OS I don't legally own], but that doesn't mean I have to abide by their rules, just because they want to know what's inside my PC, and/or how often I upgrade it, and even argue with them over the phone that this is the same PC I'm always using, and I only bought a couple of new parts.

I know somebody who upgrades his PCs [3] more often than I do, and every other month or so he has to call MS [after activating 1 too many times it won't allow u to activate thru the internet anymore], and explain why his XP OSes want him to reactivate again... and again...

The only piece of software I was not able to d/l with my corp "rigged" XP SP2 OS was Photo Story 3 [PS3]. So only that once, I went and installed "normal" from my OEM CD, and activated over the internet, just to get PS3 [which I realized I don't care for anyway]. :( But that was a 1 time thing.

So now I'm using the "rigged" XP OS most of the time, and when I feel like my "activated" OS needs some upgrading, I occasionally boot it up, and d/l + install manually all patches, which I have posted at my site for easy access: ;)

Let's take another example:

I am a computer geek [like most of us here, no doubt], so I use a multi-boot environment, and among other OSes, I use most frequently 98SE + XP SP2. Why do I have to use "genuine validation" to d/l a single XP patch [which would require me to reboot into the "activated" XP, go to their servers, d/l the darn thing, and finally, reboot back into 98SE and go back to whatever I was in the middle of], when I can d/l the file just the same, using 98SE?

In conclusion:

piracy has been on the fritz, especially since MS came up with mandatory activation.

And if u ask me, there are so many other [better] ways of stopping piracy and making sure only legitimate users install XP + are allowed to upgrade/patch their computers, and which are probably less annoying.

And let me tell u that I'm not alone in thinking this way, MS will lose customers in the long run, people who like me see Linux [or even Apple OS X] as a cheaper, viable alternative, especialy now, since Apple started shifting towards Intel as their potential CPU provider.

And if MS won't allow "suspect" users or pirated OSes to install security patches, do u know what will happen when most of these people will eventually get infected with nasty zombies/trojans/spyware/etc and spread the attacks/infections to others, some of which might be even legitimate users who don't bother patching their computers?

Me too!

Really, the price of MS stuff at least here in UK is criminal. Thankfully, I now got my purchased W98SE going great again at last, thanks to the helpfull people here. I was on the verge of going XP (I have it on my laptops) but just couldnt bring myself to pay $125 for an oem which I then had to replace if I change the motherboard.
