New ideas for the next version

Recommended Posts

ME/2000/XP/2003 System Restore, Windows File Protection, System File Protection or PCHealth/PCHelp cannot be installed on 9x OSes, unless u "hex" a bunch of 9x system files + add a few system files from ME.

Installing any of these components from 2k/xp/2k3 is out of the question because of major NTx OS core differences.

These issues have been discussed here before, please Google MSFN forums to find respective posts.

Hope this helps.

Gape:

I noticed that this WinNT4 security fix:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details...72-2BE4064466CD

more info here:

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/...n/ms04-041.mspx

respectively the MSWD6_32.WPC file from [English patch]:

http://download.microsoft.com/download/2/c...836-x86-ENU.exe

can be used with 98, 98SE + ME only if renamed to MSWRD632.WPC [goes in C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Textconv].

This MSKB article is relevant for this fix:

http://support.microsoft.com/?id=870883

To my knowledge MS never created a fix for 98 or ME, because their "normal" support life expired. :(

IMO this file would be a good addition to your next SP 2.xx release.

This patch contains MSWRD632.WPC and Wordpad.exe, isn't possible that there is some dependance between them?

BTW, MSWRD632.WPC in WNT and W2000 patch is 2004.10.21 version and are not exactly the same, WXP SP1 patch contains 2004.10.25 version.... again hard to guess what wersion will 100% reliable work on W98.

Does anybody know how to test full MSWRD632.WPC funcionality?

New version has the same exported functions as old W98 version, but much more imported functions. According to totalcmd fileinfo plugin, all references in WNT/WXP versions are successfully resolved on W98 system.

And what about new versions of converters mentioned in http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?...kb;EN-US;212265 article?

In summary, there are the following converters in Windows 98 SE:

HTML32.CNV 98100400

MSWRD632.WPC 97081200

MSWRD832.CNV 97081200

WRITE32.WPC 97031200

JPEGIM32.FLT 96091600

PCXIMP32.FLT 4.0

All of them are language dependent.

MSCONV97.DLL 98012700

This one is language independent.

oconvpck.exe contains newer versions::

MSWRD832.CNV 2003.1100.5510

JPEGIM32.FLT 2003.1100.5531

MSCONV97.DLL 2003.1100.5510

but it seems to be in English only.

Latest versions in Office XP seems to be:

MSWRD632.WPC 99080700 (Original CD-ROM)

WRITE32.WPC 99080700 (Original CD-ROM)

HTML32.CNV 2003.1100.5510 (KB832671 = SP3)

MSWRD832.CNV 2003.1100.5510 (KB832671 = SP3)

JPEGIM32.FLT 2003.1100.5510 (KB832671 = SP3)

MSCONV97.DLL 2003.1100.6252 (KB873379)

Latest versions in Office 2003 seems to be:

HTML32.CNV 2003.1100.6252 (KB841532 = SP1)

MSWRD832.CNV 2003.1100.6252 (KB841532 = SP1)

MSCONV97.DLL 2003.1100.6252 (KB841532 = SP1, KB873378)

HTML32.CNV and MSCONV97.DLL are alraedy contained in SE SP, so maybe

MSWRD832.CNV 2003.1100.6252 (KB841532 = Office 2003 SP1)

JPEGIM32.FLT 2003.1100.5531 (oconvpck.exe)

could be added. Does anybody know how to verify the functionality?

High priority:

- Add EXTRACT.EXE from IE 6.0 SP1.

I think this is bad idea beacuse EXTRACT.EXE from IE 6.0 SP1 (version 5.1.2600.1106) is Windows only application, while currect EXTRACT.EXE from Windows 98 SE (version 1.00.603.0) is DOS based application.

EXTRACT.EXE is CAB extraction tool, sometimes it is necessary to repair Windows by extracting original files form the CD-ROM CAB files - in this situation Windows is not available.

Unfortunately Wordpad.exe from NT4/2000/XP/2003 do no work under 9x. :(

But IMHO Wordpad filters should have similar [if not even identical] functions in all MS OSes, because they all apply to MS Word DOC/RTF/WRI files, which saves/edits documents in all these formats, and which should be compatible with all MS OSes.

The only filters that may not be compatible with 9x OSes are probably the newer ones, like MSWRD832.WPC [?], because Office XP + 2003 are not compatible with 9x OSes anymore.

I don't have any MS Office/Word CDs/floppies/setups.

But here is my idea how to test this WPC filter:

1. install Office 2000, XP or 2003 [the Word component anyway].

2. make sure WinNT4 MSWD6_32.WPC from MS04-041 security fix:

http://download.microsoft.com/download/2/c...836-x86-ENU.exe

is already installed under "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Textconv" folder, after being renamed to MSWRD632.WPC .

3. open a DOC file and then an RTF file both containing at least 1 icon/bitmap created in MS Office/Word 97 or 2000, NOT Office/Word XP, 2003 or newer, using WinME WORDPAD.EXE from WinME setup CD [newest version available for 9x OSes].

4. if everything works ok, there may be a chance the WPC filter works ok.

Petr,

I'm not familiar with totalcmd fileinfo plugin. Does it detect API functions?

If that's what this plugin does, another alternative would be to use the similar freeware DLL detector called Dependency Walker:

http://www.dependencywalker.com/

Direct download [415 KB, freeware]:

http://www.dependencywalker.com/depends21_x86.zip

BTW:

The *.FLT files are also used by MS Paint.

You can get them all here:

http://www.mdgx.com/add.htm#PNT

Direct download [2.2 MB, English]:

http://www.mdgx.com/files/GRPHFLTS.ZIP

Hope this helps.

File changes in the next version of the SP:

* Add OPENGL32.DLL [from Q240896].

* Add NSCIRDA.SYS [from Q323708].

* Update NWPP32.DLL [to updated Q250876].

* (?) Add MSWRD632.WPC [from Q885836].

* (?) Add MSWRD832.CNV [from Q841532].

* (?) Add JPEGIM32.FLT [from QCONVPCK.EXE].

* (?) Update EXPLORER.EXE [to IE401SP2].

Do you agree? Did I missed something?

Other changes I did:

* Replaced "MaxFileCache" setting with 512FIX.EXE tool [i wrote it in NSIS. It detects the system memory, if the system memory is more than 512 MB, it adds "MaxFileCache" setting].

Other changes I will:

* Remove modified EXPLORER.EXE and SHELL32.DLL.

* Better uninstaller [i hope].

And what about New 98 FE + 98 SE + ME patches available?

There are a bunch of fixes not included in SP now, including interesting unofficial KRNL386.EXE patch.

Most of them are already included in the SP 2.0.1.

I checked it again, I only missed Q323708 (NSCIRDA.SYS), and unofficial patches: KRNL386.EXE, VOLTRACK.VXD.

I'm not sure about these unofficial patches. I want to include them, but they should be optional at least.
