CD-ROM Disappears after first reboot

Recommended Posts

Hey, I did my unattended XP cd, of XP PRO Corporate Edition. I slipstreamed SP2, and the all the updates as of March 2005 (Thanks to RyanVM). Everything goes well on the install and it enters windows for the first time, runs my silent installations and cleanup processes and ends. Then I restart the computer and enter back into windows, and the CD-ROM drives (there are 2 in this particular PC) are both gone. I went to "add hardware," and it says "Windows successfully loaded the device driver for this hardware but cannot find the hardware device." Well, I know it's working because I installed XP with it. I also got this problem when using VMWare, but I let it go thinking it might be something that the virtual machine just normally does. I tried searching the forums, but I don't really know what to "call" this problem. So I couldn't find anything on it. Thanks for any help. I'd really like to get this fixed without reinstalling drivers everytime I load XP.

Also, I searched all over and found several different ways to enable the windows quicklaunch bar on install, but I wasn't successful with any of them. Does anyone know a sure way of making it work? (I've given up).

As for the first question, maybe try adding the drivers with nLite... as to the second question here's the registry key for the quicklaunch.

Make a file called cmdlines.txt and put it in your $OEM$ folder.

Add this code to it.

[COMMANDS]
"REGEDIT /S regkeys.reg"

Make a file called regkeys.reg and add the code below to it.

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

do you apply any registry tweaks durring your install? if you do you might want to double check them to make sure that you dont have anything there removing the drives. second if you go to your control panel and open your administrative tools the open computer managment and look under "storage"->"disk management" are the drives listed there and if they are check to see if there is an option to make them available. also sometimes burning apps and other software can break windows recognition of drives even installing windows over an older os can do this, check HERE and see if this fixes your problem too.

Wow, thanks for the quick reply. I was just looking in the device manager, and I also found this. "Windows cannot start this hardware device because its configuration information (in the registry) is incomplete or damaged (Code 19)". I guess I could go find the drivers for those two and try to add them to the install, but I did this on two different computers to see how it worked, (one on a virtual machine, one on a real HDD), and it does the same thing on both, so just getting those two drivers would only help me if I was going to use the CD for this one computer. Thanks for that quicklaunch answer. I'll try that, seems really close to one I've tried before, but maybe I was doing something wrong.

And thanks Godan, another fast reply. I will look into all that. I do have registry tweaks. I'll double check.

MasterMind

I checked the registry tweaks file. I don't see anything that would cause a problem with deleting drivers. Only things like the language bar, the windows tour, and several other things. Also in the managment section, the drives are not listed at all.

Ahhhh...I have had this same problem, and locating a fix for it was a pain, but try this...

look under the following key

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}]

Under this key you will see UpperFilters and LowerFilters. Normally there should not be anything here unless your CD/DVD requires it (or you use a product like AnyDVD. Try deleting these keys and reboot. Your drive should be restored.

"UpperFilters"=-
"LowerFilters"=-

On a side note, if you use AnyDVD, it is ok to delete the UpperFilters, but leave/reset the lower filter to

"LowerFilters"=hex(7):41,00,6e,00,79,00,44,00,56,00,44,00,00,00,00,00

(make sure the above code is all on one line)

I use this at the end of my unattended installs and it seems to have no problems as of yet...

hope this helps :D

Haha! It worked!! That is so awesome, and not too hard to change on my cd either. I checked what you said, there are a few other things about the cd drives, but there is no "upperfilters"...So I deleted lower class, rebooted, and viola! there are my drives. That is quite cool, now if I could just get that quicklaunch working as DBarras told me how to do it.

Thanks Bacd, you have been a great help.

the only time this ever happens is if u have roxio and nero at the same time.

there must be someting else that causes it as well as I only have nero...

and it is a recent development...I thik it has something to do with the newer AnyDVD and it's install order...

and np MasterMind...I remember how fustrating it was for me as well. :}

Well, my CD-ROM's are working fine now, but I still am not able to make the quick launch bar already appear on first bootup after installing windows. I did exactly what I was told (only i used "EnableQLaunch.reg") as my file name. I don't know if it works this way, but I also ran the registry file after entering windows, and then rebooted and still nothing happened. It's not really that important as enabling it only takes a couple of seconds, but it would just be cool to have it work the way I hear it's supposed to.

And I only use Nero as well, no Roxio.

I had this problem happen to me a while back. It took me forever to pin it down but it ended up being WinAmp. Not the retail package mind you, but a custom repack I did using AdminStudio. As it turns out, since WinAmp can burn CDs, it makes registry entries for that purpose including what sort of CD burner you have. I did the repack project in a VM and didn't see (or forgot) to remove the offending registry entries.

So the lesson here is that if you are installing something that has burning capabilities and it makes some bogus registry entries, this can happen to you. The UpperFilters fix is what I used to get my drives back, but in the end I went back and repackaged WinAmp properly.

Hehehe - got the same error today the first time... thats really strange... i just added a (finally working) quicklaunch.reg and two cdroms in my vm were disabled - although i installed software a minute before...

the lowerlimit was set by clonedvd - although im pretty sure it didn't do that the last time... its weird...
