open port in firwall ...?

Recommended Posts

To add a port

You must be logged on to this computer as an administrator to complete this procedure.

Open Windows Firewall.

On the Exceptions tab, click Add Port.

In Port number, type the port number that you want to add.

Select either TCP or UDP.

In Name, type a short name for the port to help you remember what it is used for.

To specify which computers can use the port, click Change Scope.

Do one of the following:

To allow connections from any computer, including those on the Internet, select Any computer (including those on the Internet), and then click OK.

To allow connections from your local subnet only, select My network (subnet) only, and then click OK.

To define a custom list, select Custom list, and then type a list of IP addresses, subnets, or both, separated by commas.

Notes

To open Windows Firewall, click Start, click Control Panel, and then double-click Windows Firewall.

If you are not sure what port number to use or whether to choose TCP or UDP, check the documentation or the Web site for the program or service that you're adding a port for.

Or just search in windows help for firewall, it has all options...

alhussainnet...

if you dont have SP1 for Windows Server 2003 installed, then it shouldnt matter as there is no firewall in 2003.

Even if you install sp1 now, it wont enable the firewall (by default unless it is slipstreamed I read somewhere) and if you do enable it afterwards, then u should follow the advice given above.

Regards,

N.

TCP it's a more complex packet than UDP, UDP it's a "stream" packet ... the information is send and it doesn't wait the answer ...

In fact, it's the software decision for use TPC or UPD so you adapt the rule for the soft.

For exemple for a ftp server, it's only TPC port to open ...

You can retrieve information about your software in the support section of his website.

Goodbye.

thank you sonic for the explanation ...

is it possible to explain (UDP it's a "stream" packet ... the information is send and it doesn't wait the answer) more in details? when you said (it doesn't wait the answer), what answer does it wait for and what is the effect if it doesn't?

sorry for that ...

Thank you
