Does anybody know what is the difference between these sets of files:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/192112

File name Version Date Time Size

------------------------------------------------------

Vfwwdm.drv 4.10.2043 8/10/98 9:35pm 15,344 bytes

Vfwwdm32.dll 4.10.2043 8/10/98 9:38pm 56,832 bytes

Kswdmcap.ax 4.10.2043 8/10/98 9:29pm 51,712 bytes

and http://www.visiongs.de/vfwupd.exe that contains:

File name Version Date Time Size

------------------------------------------------------

Vfwwdm.drv 4.10.2000 8/21/98 4:56pm 15,600 bytes

Vfwwdm32.dll 4.10.2000 8/21/98 5:40pm 57,856 bytes

Kswdmcap.ax 4.10.2000 8/21/98 5:26pm 51,712 bytes

And now - What are newer? The version 2043 is much newer than 2000, but the date is newer for files from vfwupd. Yes, the date of the file can be changed easily, but even the internal date built-in inside the file in PE header shows August 21st!!

And also often newer files are bigger.

So - any idea?

Petr

Thank you very much, I have added them recently and did not so good search for them. So now are remaining:

Q192112 Kswdmcap.ax, Vfwwdm.drv, Vfwwdm32.dll 4.10.2043 (only if this is really newer version than vfwupd.exe 4.10.2000 with newer date)

Good find, Petr.

Original VNETBIOS.VXD from Win98SE setup CD is build 4.10.1998 , same as Win98 FE.

I don't think Gape has this hotfix [yet].

Because nobody I know has it, we should request it from MS.

As far as I know the only other fix is for WinME, and way back when I tried it on Win98SE it didn't work:

Microsoft Windows ME Networking Errors VNETBIOS.VXD build 4.90.3000 [identical with the one on the WinME setup CD] Fix:

http://support.microsoft.com/?id=272991

Direct download [148 KB, English]:

http://download.microsoft.com/download/win.../272991usam.exe

Gape:

Petr and I recommend to add VNETBIOS.VXD 4.10.2223 from hotfix Q265528 to next SP 2.0 release.

I have discoverd one additional hotfix needed - Q250514 for Windows 98 Standard edition, with spoolss.dll version 4.10.2000.

http://ftp.isu.edu.tw/pub/CPatch/msupdate/.../250514usa8.exe contains the SE version only, 4.10.2223.

MDGx has spoolss.dll version for 95, 98SE, ME - but unforunately for 98FE not.

Petr

To fix the spoolss.dll problems in 98fe, Petr just overwrite that file with the WinME version [4.90.3000]. that's all. You can also do this for Win98se and not bother using Q250514. in fact using WinME spoolss.dll file under Win98 fixes more problems than what Q250514 does.

MDGx's spoolss.dll fix for 98fe/se IS 4.90.3000, but do NOT use this under ANY version of W95 as it wont fix the spoolss problems under 95 and can mess things up.

btw- Q196527 has dvdplay.exe v4.10.1999; for 98fe only.

Yes, but Windows ME is not free software and therefore parts of it cannot be put to Win98 FE or SE servicepack - or no?

This is OK I think - why do you mentioned it?

Best Regards,

Petr

that's right. parts of WinME such as the WinME spoolss.dll file can't be included in a Win98 fe/se SP (unless Gape has a license to legally put some WinME files in his 98se SP).

however, the WinME spoolss.dll file should be included in MDGx's 98se2me pack. ask MDGx if that file is in his pack.

SPOOLSS.DLL is indeed installed by 98SE2ME, but u need a WinME setup CD to extract it from. :(

bummer!

Q209321 Dblbuff.sys patch for Win98fe can be left on after installing Win98, Petr. The issue mostly occurs with installing OEM [non-retail] editions of Win98fe on fast computers. some IBM machines that have OEM 98fe have Q209321 pre-installed.

Q265528 CAN be installed under BOTH 98 FE and SE. Microsoft article 265528 is wrong!

The Win95 version of Q265528 is included in the DUN 1.4 update for W95.

The Win98 version of DUN 1.4, on the other hand, doesn't include Q265528.

Q243048 Apmbatt.sys is only needed if you run 98fe on a laptop computer. useless on desktop computers.

Q230791 is only needed if you actually use Firewire devices and that you have an IEEE 1394/Firewire expansion card installed to your computer and you use a firewire cable to connect your devices. I know for sure Sony computers have built-in Firewire/1394 ports. Even with Q230791 installed, Firewire support in 98fe is still weak and most 1394 devices really require at least 98 SE with Q242975 patch installed.

Q196527 Dvdplay.exe - only needed if you have a DVD player installed to your 98 machine.

There is no difference between OEM and Retail version in executable files, the only difference is in the license file and a few INF files. There is a possibility of semi-slipstreaming and then the updated Dblbuff.sys will be used during the installation - or not?

Yes, these hofixes are necessary just in special cases. But I think I try to prepare a service pack suitable for all computers, not just for desktop computers without IEEE1394 port and without DVD player.

I agree that trying to obtain these hotfixes should have somewhat lower priority, but they should be contained in the "FE SP" if available.

You CAN slimstream the updated dblbuff.sys file. though you must include it in the Win98 folder or wherever your Win98fe setup files are stored in (except on CD, unless you create your own W98fe setup cd & including the dblbuff.sys file). I did that and W98 setup did use that dblbuff.sys file. and you can keep it after Win98fe is installed.

Another difference between OEM and retail versions of Windows setup is the setup order. Setup prompts you to enter a cd-key (the 25-alphanumeric product key) near the beginning of setup in retail editions. In OEM editions, it prompts you for cd-key near the end of setup. It has been like that with Win98, 2000, ME and XP.

Petr, be sure to get others involved in trying out sybesma's thread on requesting hotfixes from Microsoft. I should not be the only one that has been taking action for several months now and getting good results in getting those hotfixes. I may be busy in the upcoming months and I may not be able to get those remaining W98/WME hotfixes.

Yes, I know, but so far I'm not sure if anobody would really need the FE SP.

I suppose to prepare the first version, based on Gape's SE SP 2.0, and then I will see what will be the feedback. Maybe W98 is really dead now, I don't know.

you mean 98fe or 98se or all versions of 98. my aunt has an old laptop PC with 98fe and it still works well with most of the appropriate patches installed.

an unofficial 98fe sp? i might want to try it out someday Petr if it ever comes out.
