This is a huge revision that Opera users have been waiting for since a long time. The main home-page will get descriptions and changelogs later. But for now, we can get it here:

Opera 8

(the above link is to the non-Java version, you can anyway install the Sun JVM separately if you want Java).

It took me some time to add my cookies and wand-data and to integrate flashget and my custom toolbars......
For those of you migrating..... just go to:
C:\Documents and Settings\USERNAME\Application Data\Opera\Opera75\profile

That's where all your mails, notes, contacts, transfers, bookmarks, wand-logins, cookies, etc. - basically EVERYTHING is stored.

Copy away that folder to somewhere.

Then uninstall the old opera. Install opera 8.0

Then configure the base settings to how you want it.

Then just exit opera, and go to the new profile folder:

C:\Documents and Settings\USERNAME\Application Data\Opera\Opera8\profile

And now replace the empty new files, with the files from the previous one.

For example, restore your wand from old opera to this new one - wand.dat

Similarly, opera notes - notes.adr

Bookmarks - opera6.adr

Mails - mail

So on with everything else too - settings, toolbars, menus, sessions, search, panels, cookies, Skins........ whatever.

Basically, the point is that all your old things are in that folder. If you want to move, all you need to bother about, is that folder alone. That's one good thing, unlike IE which has its crap spread all over your C: partition.

Hoping this helps those of you moving to the new version from an old one....

Mails are not stored in the profile folder (atleast in the case of Opera 8 build 7483).

Browse to this folder-

C:\Documents and Settings\USERNAME\Application Data\Opera\Opera 8 Beta\

Copy both the folders profile and mail somewhere else, then follow the procedure given above.

Some of the really nice features that I actually make use of:

Wand (Password manager)

Sidebar (activated by F4)

Completely customizable screen (I hide my menu bar, no File, Edit, etc)

Lots of Skins

Built in Google search

Nicknames - type in the nickname into the address bar, and the corresponding bookmark will be opened

Stupidly fast engine.

Soulin, your best bet is to install Opera8 and give it a try for a week. Make it your only browser that you use. That's the only way that you can really get to know whether or not you like the features. I used to use Maxthon, but there were too many little bugs that I just couldnt' get over (like the Find function freezing up...)

Opera 8 is good. I imported 1000+ bookmark and i want their Bookmark icon to be updated since it would be easier to see.

i open 200+ Bookmark all at once. And opera did not crash!.

try that with Maxthon / Firefox.

And yes. Its Engine is Stupidly fast!.

Could you describe some new/cool features for us, non-Opera compatible? :)

P.S.: This is not flame - I am curious

My old posts all over the board is littered with mentions of Opera. :P

Maybe you might find these threads an interesting read to know more about opera?

thoughts for the sick-of-IE

Opera and Firefox 1 .... two .... three

In short:

- goddamn lot of features

- extremely tight-coding so that its not bloated

- security

- web standards truly supported to the max.

- infinite customisability.

- speed.

Its mostly targeted at the power user. Noobs get intimidated by it - which is fine by the primary audience of Opera because:

- the noob needs no features, the smallest change serves only to scare him anyway

- its unlikely he'll pay (because he does not see the value in the product)

questions about switching to opera

Why Opera ?

Why I love Opera

Why choose the Opera Internet Suite?

Why I prefer Opera over Firefox

Email clients need a kick to the head

........ But here's how the email managing dilemma got solved - Opera's integrated M2 mail/chat/RSS/News reader
