VXD errors are software errors that occur in system files or drivers. Usually rebooting is required if one occurs.

VXD errors are usually hard to diagnose, and the numbers in the error message aren't much help. If it is due to a bad software installation, you might try installing the latest versions of things. For eample, you might try installing the Directx 9.0c April 2005 redistributable:

Also, did you install Win 98 SE Unofficial SP 2.0RC3? Did you install the latest drivers for your hardware? If you have a Via motherboard, did you install Hyperion (formerly known as 4-in-1) drivers?

If you installed a fresh version of Windows and installed the things above then it sounds like it may be related to bad hardware. I have personally seen VXD errors occur randomly due to bad RAM chips.

Did you recently install new hardware?

It may be that your PC it is clogged with dust and has thermal problems. It may help to clean dust out of the PC and check for loose chips or boards. Removing and reinserting your RAM chips may also help.

If you feel your CPU or RAM is suspect, then try these stress test tools and see if the VXD errors can be triggered:

Prime95 (http://www.mersenne.org/freesoft.htm) - Be sure in the menu to go to Advanced, enter the password 9876, and then set Priority to 10. This will stress your PC as much as possible.

SuperPi (http://files.extremeoverclocking.com/file.php?f=36)

Thanks for the reply. :D

Lets see:

I have the DirectX 90c. Yes, my machine is a little dusty. I installed Win 98 SE Unofficial SP 2.0RC1. I installed the latest Asus drivers. I ran a tech check via Noton 2005 and the video all checks out fine. I had the latest nvidia drivers but I had heard the were too much for the older cards so I switched back to my version from July of last year. ****I did install a new hard drive.**** What do i do about the new hardware?

After reinstalling windows did you also do a full reintall of the game(s)? I remember a couples times with diablo 2 (just as an example) there were two separate times where I remember the game crashing and not being able to run again. Some file(s) became corrupt and the game itself, not the OS, had to be wiped and reinstalled in order to fix it.

I would also suggest running prime95 for a while, as azagahl mentioned. Or possibly the burn-in function of sisoft sandra. Memtest86 might also be a good test to throw at it. Besides the geforce mx-400, can you give a detailed list of your hardware?

Thanks for the reply. I was just looking at the bottom of my new hard drive box and noticed it has a disk at the bottom. I never ran the disk after install since my computer recognized the the new hard drive. Could this be a problem?

I looked at the first program recommended. . . it requires an internet connection which my computer does not have (nor do I want). I have downloaded the Pi program and will load it up.

I'll have to look up sisoft sandra and Memtest86. I have a memory test on the Ultimate Boot CD but I don't remember what it was. I think it took a few days to run so I skipped that one. Right now we have thunderstorms so I doubt I will be running my computer straight through for a few days.

I loaded each game straight from the factory installation disk.

My game computer has the following:

Processor: AMD Anthlon XP 1600+ 1.6 GHz

Math Support: On Chip

BIOS: Award Software 04/30/03

Ports: 1 parallel, 1 Serial

Memory: 256 MB

Floppy: 1.44MB

Hard Disk: 37.27 GB; 78 GB (New Disk)

Multimedia: Sound, CDRom, CDRom Burner

Video: 800x600 in 64 colors, Nvidia Geforce4 MX 420 ver. 4.0

BTW what is the safest way to clean the dust and keep the dust out of the computer?

It sounds unlikely but it might be worth a try? Your original error message said VDD and now I think DD means disk drive! It might also be worth repartitioning and reformatting. For this I suggest using Ranish partition manager.

BTW, when you boot up and press Delete, is the drive listed in your BIOS as Auto or LBA or something?

Prime95 should run without an Internet connection. When installing, select "Just stress testing" and you don't have to participate in the prime number search. Give Prime95 a try; but Prime95, SuperPi, and Memtest86 won't really help if the problem turns out to be related to the disk.

Memtest86.

I don't like this program personally. I've had extremely bad RAM chips (ones where the PC crashes randomly during POST depending on which slots they are in) and Memtest failed to detect a problem even after running overnight. Windows would crash within minutes.

BTW what is the safest way to clean the dust and keep the dust out of the computer?

I don't know how to keep dust out, but there isn't much danger in cleaning a PC. Some people use a canister of compressed air to blow dust away. I have tiny vacuum attachments such as a brush or hose. If there is enough dust you can just use tweezers to pull large pieces away.

If when running a game, can be caused by an unstable processor OC. If OC'ing your processor, probably time to increase the Vcore.

Well i used Partition Magic instead of fdisk to partition my harddrive this time. I ran Super_pi and after an hour and 30 minutes the program was completed on the 32 mb test. I set up the CPU test to run so we will see what happens but it is running fine now. I loaded up the same game and it works. I think my problem may have been installing my SiS drivers then updating the sis drivers before installing the C_Media drivers/applications. I waited to update untill I had installed the C_media drivers/applications. The correct order appears to makes a difference.
