Big Download Small download

Recommended Posts

Many people already try and feel that this Service Pack is good and usefull.

and we plan to release the version 2 not far away.

I just thinking that the 15 MB download each time is considered too big for some people (especially with slow dialup).

and if we already install previous version, we also did not need this all.

so what I think is how if starting from version 2, say it version 2.1. you can offering 2 different download:

1. Complete download which contain all service pack (15MB)

2. Service pack update, so this download is much smaller, and contain only the different between version 2 and version 2.1. and user who already install version 2 only need to download this update.

just my 2c.

Too big, utomo? Maybe for you but I don't see it that way. I also use dialup but my dialup connections are a little faster and more stable. Get a third party download manager if your dialup connections are not reliable enough to stay online for a few straight hours and if you need to download a portion of the 98se service pack on part of the day and resume downloading the remainder of the SP the next.

otherwise, get cable or DSL if the area which you live in offers those kind of broadband internet services. those are fast and reliable AND now affordable.

I think for a service pack, a long beta and RC period is very helpful. The service pack changes and updates crucial parts of the OS, so the stability of the service pack is also crucial.

However, especially BETA and first RC releases are testers only.

15 Mb is still ok for a dial-up connection. It takes between 1 and 2 hours, and you need to do it only once in a while. The point is if you have a pay-per minute plan or an unlimited access.

But for the SP it's not a good idea because it increases the risk of bugs and compilation errors. How could Gape makes sure that the SP and Update gives exactely the same effect? It's twice more work.

But what about splitting SP into different ones: One for system performance, another one for cosmetic tweaks and maybe a third one for another specialised tasks such as network management that not everybody use...
