Windows 98se Doesn't Recognize Zip File/fonts

Recommended Posts

I have just installed Windows 98SE. The first thing I did before installing any drivers was to install the latest service pack. When I boot up a cd the compter wilth a variety of programs I loaded for the install process, such as USB drivers, etc a percentage of the files are not recognized as zip files. I either get an error meassage saying the file is not a valid Win32 application or I get the "Open With" Dialog.

Thinking that the problem was from me burning the cd from Linux I download from my Windows XP and put the USB zip file on a floppy. The Windows 98SE still did not recognize the file as a zip file.

Thinking I had a problem with the install I reinstalled Win98SE and tried the floppy again. The floppy still registered as a "not valid Win 32 application."

Can someone help me?

P.S. I tried to unistall the service pack and it refused to uninstall.

Thanks for the response and the link. :thumbup Yes, I was reading the proper order after I did it my way. I had read it a few weeks ago but obviously I didn't remember the correct order.

Is it necessary for me to update Internet Explorer if I am not going to be hooked to the internet? In fact I would rather install Firefox for Windows. I have downloaded the IE irradicator from 98lite website. What do you think?

if i were you i would install ie 6 as some of your apps may need it and you need it for windows update, whether you are hooked to the net or not,if your apps don't need ie to work then by all means remove ie,you can always reinstall ie but with newer components instead of the older ones that come with windows.

Thanks for the reply. Okay I will keep IE 6 and will update it also.

This may or may not be the right place to put this but seeing as zip utilities were mentioned...

This may be of a little interest.

Compressed folders anyone?

You can do this and that with batch files like on this site

http://www.xanga.com/item.aspx?user=clifno...ews&uid=1640968

or http://groups.msn.com/ComputerHelpClub/nea...491374764500540

but I chose to just add this prior:

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Plus!98\Setup\ZipFldr]

"Installed"="1"

fix provided courtesy of http://www.microsoft.com/windows98/downloa...048/default.asp

It'll open up in a new window when you click on a "compressed folder" until you update the DDEEXEC part of the registry; or file-type associations to the likes of XP.

Don't know if ME is the same or not.

Then it'll open in the same window, drag and drop, cut, copy, and go up a dir. I do like 7zip, but usually use powerarchiver because of lack of drag&drop ability in 7zip. I usually end up using 7zip to open files powerarchiver says it can, but can't; and to really zip files down when I need to. But it'd be nice to integrate a zip ability on install. Yes... I know it lacks but I thought it was still sort've neat.

As for IE6 I would sort've agree. My wife still uses IE. There's been countless debates over the best version of IE over the years but that one does have a few more helpful functions. But I myself use K-Meleon. Sort've a cousin to FireFox. :thumbup The only time I really use IE is when I'm too impatient to open K-Meleon before opening a link (the wife won out on the default browser). She schools online and they apparently have only one set of instructions on how to access their system.(outlook express) I didn't have the patience to find an alternative setup. (Or maybe I should say she didn't have the patience for me to find an alternative setup.)

I have a BETTER idea, Jaymo and Shamgar on installing the Compressed Folders feature from the Plus!98 pack.

Get the following files:

dunzip.dll, dunzip32.dll, dzip.dll, dzip32.dll and zipfldr.dll

then place ALL these files in the Windows\System folder and 'register' each dll file by typing the following:

regsvr32 /s dunzip.dll

regsvr32 /s dunzip32.dll

regsvr32 /s dzip.dll

regsvr32 /s dzip32.dll

regsvr32 /s zipfldr.dll

Registering these DLL files will enable Win98se to have the Compressed Folders feature. I won't bother downloading those batch files because you need to login with an MSN Passport account to obtain the batch files. You have to register with the MSN Groups site to get an MSN Passport account. ONLY MSN Groups members can actually download those batch files.

Windows 98 SE does NOT include nor install ZIPFLDR.DLL or dzip*.* or dunzip*.* files.

U need MS Plus! for Windows 98 CD or Windows ME Setup CD to install/extract/register ZIPFLDR.DLL.

Then u need to install the appropriate security patches from MS web site:

* Microsoft Windows ME ZIP Decompression Unchecked Buffer + Recoverable

Compressed Folders Passwords ZIPFLDR.DLL Security Vulnerability Fix:

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/...n/ms02-054.mspx

Direct download [270 KB, English]:

http://download.windowsupdate.com/msdownlo...6BFCFC147E1.EXE

More info:

http://support.microsoft.com/?id=329048

If trying to install this patch on 98SE, u need to extract the DLL by hand first, then copy it to %windir%\system, and then regsvr32 it.

* Microsoft Plus! for Windows 98/98 SP1/98 SE ZIP Decompression Unchecked

Buffer + Recoverable Compressed Folders Passwords ZIPFLDR.DLL Security

Vulnerability Fix:

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/...n/ms02-054.mspx

Direct download [268 KB, English]:

http://download.microsoft.com/download/WIN.../329048USA8.EXE

But why bother? ZIPFLDR is a very primitive tool, and can be used only from Windows Explorer right-click context menu [shell].

Better, install a full-fledged (un)archiving tool [most are freeware]:

http://www.mdgx.com/toy.htm#ZIP

that can handle all popular formats from an easy to use interface.

I agree with MDGx. The Compressed Folders feature is kinda lame compared to using tools like WinRAR, ARJFolder, Power Archiver and Winzip.

Best to get Winzip 9.0 because it can handle ZIP files that use 128-bit and 256-bit high encryption. ZIP files that use 128-bit/256-bit encryption cannot be opened by the Compressed Folders addon.

so let's scrap the ideas on installing the Compressed Features addon and stick to using archiving utilities like Power Archiver and Winzip.

I agree with Soldier1st....

Even if you won't be using the internet, or simply won't be using IE, I would rather install IE6 with the newest patches than run an IE remover utility. As a .Net developer I can vouch that thousands of programs require IE because it's easier to use Microsoft's built in HTML support than code your own (who wants to re-invent the wheel).

To remove IE would actually break Windows ability to run, and I would expect a newly patched IE6 box to be, in theory, more secure than IE removed as you can assume there could be shared DLLs IE uses that were upgraded in IE6 but can not be removed with an IE remover because they are shared.

And lastly, considering the fact that if you are running Win98, you probably don't have a lot of ram to spare, and IE often uses less ram than 3rd party browsers although I haven't tested this on Win9x, only 2000 and XP. PS: don't confuse memory cache with browser ram usage!

One thing I've noticed, and I cannot say that it's connected to the service pack, is that although zip files remain associated with whatever program I've installed (IZarc and 7-Zip up till now), individual zips files lose the icon associated with the program. Even if I go into folder options|file types|zip files|edit|change icon and change the icon, it reverts shortly back to the insipid little nothing icon that comes with Windows.

Has anyone else experienced this?

If u install Windows 98SE from scratch u need to install either:

- MS Plus! 98 [obsolete, hard to find, not worth your money] which includes ZIP folders [same as ME/XP/2003]:

http://www.mdgx.com/newtip23.htm#TP!P

- or a full fledged zipping/unzipping tool [most are freeware]:

http://www.mdgx.com/toy.htm#ZIP

Otherwise ZIP files will not be recognized by 98SE.

Hope this helps.
