Are the newest releases going to be installed in 2.0?

I know the following are currently available:

MS05-001 - 890175

MS05-013 - 891781

MS05-014 - 867282

I also know that M$ hasn't released a patch for this one yet, that I'm waiting for:

MS05-002 - 891711

Thanks

MS05-001 - 890175

MS05-013 - 891781

MS05-014 - 867282

MS05-002 - 891711

890175: HTML Update. SP has better. It has HTML Update from Windows 2003 (MDGx's update).

891781 & 867282: IE Updates. SP does not include IE updates.

891711: MS hasn't released it yet. (Thanks erpdude8).

For IE updates, you should go WindowsUpdate site. It will detect and show related IE updates for the your system.

You're correct, MajikUF. The MS05-002 - 891711 security updates for Win98/ME are not yet available at Windows Update. I've recently contacted M$ and they still can't determine when the MS05-002 security updates for Win98/ME will be made available. So you will have to wait for a while. perhaps several weeks from now.

891711 update is NOT an IE update, Gape. Read Microsoft security bulletin MS05-002 carefully and expand the 'Security Update Information' sections.

Is Microsoft still making patches for Windows 98?  :P

I'm sure Gape will integrate these patches into SP 2.0

uh, yeah hp38guser! did you not know that M$ is still supporting Win98/ME until june 30, 2006. they mention this on this support lifecycle announcement page:

http://support.microsoft.com/gp/lifean1

even though MS provides 'extended' or little support [i almost want to call it "life support"] for Win98/ME they're still making some patches for them.

ONLY new IE updates for Win98 & WinME will be posted at Windows Update and nowhere else from now on. Some new Win98 & ME security updates like the 891711 update will NOT be immediately available at Windows Update.

The 888113 [MS05-015] "hyperlink" IE security update is currently not available for Win98/ME users at Windows Update. Like with the 891711 update Win98 & ME users will have to wait until it is posted.

If you read MS security bulletins MS05-002 and MS05-015 click on the 'Frequently asked questions (FAQ) related to this security update' link. And carefully read the statement below the question: Are Windows 98, Windows 98 Second Edition, or Windows Millennium Edition critically affected by one or more of the vulnerabilities that are addressed in this security bulletin?

now you'll see why MS isn't quick enough to release newer Win98/ME security patches unlike with the Win2k/XP/2k3 patches they release.

Well, I still have a few 98 machines that I support and many of them are over a slow link, which makes going to WindowsUpdate nearly impossible. Fortunately, I can download the patches from the catalog site and send them over and then each can run the patch.

http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/catalog/en/default.asp

It's a great place to just get the patches. Fortunately, I think I'll be rid of them all in the next few months so my SUS can update the XP machines.

They are just horrible slow with Windows 98 SE and ME patches :puke:

All they have to do is copy / past some lines of code and compile the files for Windows 98 systems. I think it could be done in less than 1 hour

yeah it sucks that MS can't provide new Win98, 98se & ME security fixes fast enough since the extension of Win98/ME support took effect in Jan. 2004.

the ms05-002 and ms05-015 hlink.dll security patches for win98/me have yet to be developed. So they're currently not available at Windows Update. If you look at the 'Security Update Information' section (click on it to expand the details) of security bulletin MS05-015 the WinXP & Win2003 patches have slightly different versions of the hlink.dll file.

I like the V4 Windows Update site as well as the Windows Update catalog page.

too bad the new version of Windows Update site (V5):

http://v5.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/

will only work for Windows 2000 SP3-SP4, Windows XP SP1-SP2 and Windows Server 2003.

The V5 Windows Update site can resume partial downloads, unlike previous versions of Windows Update. if you downloaded a patch from V5 WU and you cancel it halfway, just select that update again and Windows Update will download the remaining portion of the update.

Is KB867282 available for 98 at all?

yup, but only for IE6 SP1. There is no KB867282 IE 5.5 SP2 update for Win98 and IE 5.5 SP2 is now supported by MS only for WinME. If you want the IE 5.5 SP2 version of the KB867282 update you will have to look at the V4 Windows Update catalog site and search for WinME updates.

If you are getting the KB867282 update for IE6 SP1 you can install that patch under Win98 and WinME.

folow-up on ms05-015 hlink.dll security patches - I downloaded the Win2000 & WinXP versions of the hlink.dll security updates and extracted the files inside by running those patches on my XP SP2 system with the /x switch. I viewed the hlink.dll files from both patches in the WinDiff file comparison tool. Guess what? They are NOT binarilly identical. meaning the hlink.dll files are not exactly the same. Looks to me that the hlink.dll files are Windows specific and if you use these hlink.dll files on a Win9xME system, it'll cause IE to malfunction.

so Win98/WinME users will have to wait for MS to make and release a 9xME version of the KB888113/MS05-015 security patch.

actually it isn't quite that simple in implementing the new security fixes for Win98/ME since MS has been used to working on security fixes for W2k/XP/2k3 for many months now.

I have been told recently by MDGx that the 888113 & 891711 updates for Win98/ME have now been posted at Windows Update and he gave me the links to download the patches. Better late than never but now the MS05-002 & MS05-015 updates for Win98/ME are now available.

I have been told recently by MDGx that the 888113 & 891711 updates for Win98/ME have now been posted at Windows Update and he gave me the links to download the patches.  Better late than never but now the MS05-002 & MS05-015 updates for Win98/ME are now available.

And I was also told my MDGx that the KB891711 updates for Win98 & WinME can lockup

those systems at startup. I have read at another forum that it did lockup some people's

machines. See this forum page:

http://www.dslreports.com/forum/remark,12875676~mode=flat

users who have installed the 891711 updates for 98/ME and DO experience problems should prevent the kb891711.exe file from loading at startup from the msconfig tool and that should make the problem go away.

so the KB891711 security patches for W98/ME are flawed and should be revised.

so what if MS is kinda slow in releasing new W98/ME updates. better to be 'slow AND steady' than to be 'fast AND wreckless'
