DLF Posted December 18, 2004 Posted December 18, 2004 @ admin et alAny idea when the guide to downloading & installing the post SP2 Hotfixes will be updated? I know most of use use RyanVM's excellent 100% reliable .cab, but during the intermediate stages between his releases a guide would be useful. We also must consider those that dont use his cab and who would benefit from an updated guide. The webpage says "Coming soon" & I know time might be short for admins, but this guide is really long overdue. Any chance of an update?
Incroyable HULK Posted December 18, 2004 Posted December 18, 2004 Well for now you can use my Sticky:Sticky: HOTFIXES: Win2000 SP4 – WinXP SP1 – WinXP SP2
DLF Posted December 18, 2004 Author Posted December 18, 2004 @Incroyable HulkThanks for the pointer, its an excellent and accurate list and all credit to you for keeping the sticky updated so well, I WAS aware of it. Perhaps I didnt make it clear, what I was getting at in my thread was the actual nuts and bolts of creating the folder, the inf file, the qchain business etc. as I felt that the GUIDE was long overdue. (With respect to the admins who may not have had to time to work on it).If Ryans latest pack v104 is integrated into your OS iso then you will be totally up to date for now, but it wont be long before some more hotfixes are released! But there are many who DONT use Ryan's packs.
RyanVM Posted December 18, 2004 Posted December 18, 2004 Well, all post-SP2 patches do support the /integrate command, which works better than nothing.
Incroyable HULK Posted December 18, 2004 Posted December 18, 2004 @DLFI agree with that... If you are like me, you don't like to depend on utilities to get the job done Not that I don't like all thoses utilities available around but I prefer to know everything that is happening in my Unattended Setup and I don't want to mess with the I386 folder unless absolutely necessary. Anyway, your request is propably under way right now. If you look at the Sticky, there is a topic regarding the complete rewriting of the guide...
DLF Posted December 18, 2004 Author Posted December 18, 2004 @ et alIn my personal situation I use Ryan's latest pack but what I would like to do between Ryan's point releases is also use SVCPack or perhaps something else for hotfixes, i.e.a combination of the two and this is what I'm struggling to find a solution for at the moment. I'm in the process tonight of making a new iso with Ryan's v104 pack - BUT I want to know how to be able to integrate MS post Ryan v104 pack hotfixes. Can I use the /integrate cmd to literally integrate them into my iso image? Or do the exe's have to be put on my CD and called from somewhere?
Incroyable HULK Posted December 18, 2004 Posted December 18, 2004 If you use the /integrate: switch you will notice that the KBxxx.exe get copied over to the svcpack folder (inside I386) so you can execute the exe anywhere you want on your computer. You'll have to do this command on your distribution folder. I wouldn't recommend you do this on the ISO
DLF Posted December 18, 2004 Author Posted December 18, 2004 @Incroyable hulk et alThink I understand now. (At last I hear you say!) Need to expand my iso into "proper" files and folders first. In the cmd window i need to type =kbxxx.exe /integrate:path_to_i386_dirPlease excuse my ignorance but then will this just "put" the hotfix in the svcpack dir or will it integrate the hotfix into the OS properly? Thanks for all your advice.
Incroyable HULK Posted December 18, 2004 Posted December 18, 2004 mostly just "put" the hotfixe in the right place and add the correct entry under svcpack.inf.I you want an"integration" of the hotfixes in your distribution, you'll have to use some utilities...
DLF Posted December 18, 2004 Author Posted December 18, 2004 @ Incroyable HulkThanks for all your advice, I'll do some googling and research before posting anymore on here. Dont really see the point in "integrating" a hotfix for it just to reside in the svcpack dir without any execution or actual integration taking place??? Unless the svcpack.inf file executes/integrates the hotfix post-install or gets called by something??? Hence the orig request for an updated hotfix workshop.
Incroyable HULK Posted December 18, 2004 Posted December 18, 2004 As long as you use the /integrate: option, you don't have to do anything else... that's the purpose of this switche
Vadikan Posted December 18, 2004 Posted December 18, 2004 As long as you use the /integrate: option, you don't have to do anything else... that's the purpose of this switcheI saw your svcpack.inf in the sticky thread. It didn't have qchain.exe line in the svcpack.inf [setupHotfixesToRun]. Is it not needed when the /integrate switch is used? Sorry, not sure what thread to choose for the question (this one or the sticky).
Incroyable HULK Posted December 18, 2004 Posted December 18, 2004 I've seen somewhere that qchain.exe is no longer required for Windows XP SP2...
Vadikan Posted December 18, 2004 Posted December 18, 2004 I've seen somewhere that qchain.exe is no longer required for Windows XP SP2...Ok, I think this is what it is. At least, I couldn't find anything more relevant to SP2. The Guide for Installing and Deploying Updates for Microsoft® Windows® XP Service Pack 2 Using Qchain.exeWindows XP updates have Qchain.exe functionality built in as part of the Update.exe installation program. You can install SP2, and then install any number of post–SP2 updates without having to restart the computer between installations. If multiple updates replace the same file, Qchain.exe ensures that the correct version is retained. If you install multiple updates, be sure to use the /Z option that is described in “Command-line options for the update package” later in this document. If the update that you are installing does not use Update.exe as its installation engine, you might need to install that update separately. The quote doesn't say particularly about XP SP2, but the document title does.
Alanoll Posted December 19, 2004 Posted December 19, 2004 the /integrate switch, all it does, is add the hotfix file to the SVCPACK dir inside I386, and add an entry to SVCPACK.INF. If there are files within the pack that are newer then the ones that were present on the RTM of the OS, they are then replaced with the newer versions. The SP1 guide still is relevant when you want to do it manually, however the SP2 section would have only delt with calling the hotfix with /integrate and that's it.Also, I should mention, that section of the write is finished. Just not uploaded
