Another question:

Can one boot windows XP on a computer using the 6 bootdisks, select USB support during the boot. Will one then be able to access an external USB HDD? ... following this... will they be able to access/browse the PC and external HDD using the command prompt at this point? :)

it depends on your motherboard. Newer mother board support USB legacy that will boot up the HD prior to any os or boot disk even load en allow you to access driver-less usb devices: HD, floppy, CDROM, mice, keyboard, etc.

There is also a low boot version of windows just for Hardwares verification called Windows PE
