gamehead200
I have an old computer with Windows 3.1 and I decided to put in a CD-ROM drive. The problem is, whenever I boot up the OS, it doesn't show up in the file manager. Is my motherboard compatible or does it just not recognize the CD-ROM drive? zipp51
If your cdrom didn't come with drivers then you need to get some for win3.1.Usually they come with retail cdroms.Identify your hardware on the top,as it sits right side up.DriverGuide and go here to find your drivers. Lezend
CDROM does support in windows 3.1 You just have to download a driver for it. It will be MSCD in config.sys and autoexec.bat These will initiate the driver before os loaded for the cdrom to work. You can get the file at windrivers.com for your specific CDrom.Added: If your motherboard is well known, you might be able to flash the bios for the newest update. Hopefully they still have support for it. If you are lucky, you can allow CDROM emu boots directly from bios. But, if system able to run windows 3.1 why not run windows 95? It is an abandon warez now and its completely free. You can download it off the web.
gamehead200
Has anyone ever heard of a Trident motherboard, cuz thats what it is.... The motherboard was bought around 9 years ago in 1993...
MSNwar
Hmm, I know Trident makes Video Drivers (Ihave a diskette if you need the drivers), but I didn't know they made motherboards. Wew, this is really going back.Anyway, if all of that sounds confusing, go over to http://www.bootdisk.com and download a CD-ROM diskette (lots to choose from) and see their guides for installing a CD-ROM drive.Like FthrJack said, also check t make sure the CD-ROM drive is installed properly in the first place. The cable he is talking about has a thin (hard to see) red line on one side that runs the length of the cable. Where the line terminates at the end of the plastic connectors is where pin number one is located. Be sure to plug that connector into the motherboard in the correct position. Newer boards are clearly marked with a "1" for this purpose. If you board is not clearly marked (it may be very small to read - get a magnifier glass) simply plug the cable into the CD-ROM drive with the red line seated in the right-hand side of the CD-ROM drives connector. This assumes your CD-ROM drive is mounted in an upright position. Be sure to get that boot dikette from bootdisk.com Hope this helps.
