recommended way to obtain M$ hotfixes

guess this forum thread can also be useful when requesting patches for obsolete Win95

and the now unsupported WinNT4.

i didn't play close attention to what stuffie699 said for Windows version so he

really does use Win98se. in that case follow what MDGx said to get the timedate.cpl

fix.

like i said in another thread, i'm not going to ask MS again for the Q246615 hotfix.

MS didn't put the actual patch in the hotfix package they sent me and only had the

readme file. i'm taking a break in asking for MS hotfixes for a few weeks so i

can get back to more important things in life.

India support is giving me tons of grief over the 242941 hotfix you were asking for.

The same !@#$% (Abhiranjan) keeps replying to my e-mails denying my request.

It's like a broken record. I don't think this !@#$% sends out hotfixes to anyone.

In fact, you often have to ask them twice because it's a 'training issue' shall we say, with India tech support.

Some of them think they aren't allowed to send them and some of them that have been around for a while will send them to you on the first request.

I have never had to ask them a 3rd time yet.

BTW, erp: I got the hotfix you requested, both the server and workstation version were sent to me on the 2nd request.

Never, never allow a first refusal to discourage you.

Like I said, I have never had to ask a 3rd time.

You just have to get to another person there sometimes that is allowed to think for themselves.

I must have jinxed myself now that I've had to ask for 242941 four times now.

not so. try asking for a different Win98 patch sybesma. i know with requesting

most but not all win98 hotfixes, ms usually get it right the first time. with some of the hotfixes,

they say they may not have them anymore and can potentially cause more problems

than fixing them.

5th time is a charm.

Just stay away from some guy named Abhiranjan who denied me 3 of the 4 times I was denied on that one.

Got the 242941 fix, FINALLY, and my batting average is back to 1.000 again.

Whew! Didn't think it was ever going to happen for a while there. ;-)

I like Erik best. at least he's intelligent and understands well our problems.

Elizabeth was also helpful when I was asking for the timedate.cpl Q237493 patch.

it's too bad I don't hear from her anymore.

I'm no longer going to request the Q265528 patch. it's probably crap. MS article

265528 now states that the problem applies to Win95 SP1 and Win98 standard edtion,

as in Win98 1st edition and not 2nd edition. At least the Win95 version of the Q265528

fix IS included in the DUN 1.4 update for Win95.

This method does work. I asked MS for Q243220 and they sent to to me, no questions asked. Quick, too - they sent it the day after I emailed. I followed sybesma's script pretty closely.

To: wrhelp@microsoft.com
Subject: Request for fix for KB Q243220

Hi,

My computer is currently running Windows 98 SE, and I'm getting an error message that says this:

The remote server machine does not exist or is unavailable (Error 462)

After searching the Help and Support KB, I found an article titled "COM Internet Services Do Not Work Without ProxyOverride Entry" (Q243220) which mentions my exact problem.

Is there any way you can e-mail me the fix mentioned in the article?

Thanks,

The support email specifically said they were sending me the English version, so I imagine localized versions exist.

Noxious Ninja, can you send me the Q243220 patch for Win98? thanks.

Noxious Ninja, can you send me the Q243220 patch for Win98?  thanks.
U can d/l it here.

Thanks MDGx. However, the Q240664/Q243220 Win98 rpcltccm.dll patch will need to be re-installed if you install the Q269874 rpcrt4.dll or the Q315575 rpcltscm.dll patch.

Ask Gape again if someone sent him the Q270063 ndis.vxd patch for Win98se. The newer ndis.vxd file is included in 2.0 RC1 & RC2 of the W98se SP.

2. Click on "Microsoft Windows Update" link.

http://support.microsoft.com/oas/default.aspx?Gprid=6527

I could obtain the hotfix from manager.
