i actualy could cuzz i know how obviously but other ppl do it for me so why bother...

Then move on to more important things, soldier1st and don't waste any time

making anymore posts here on this page. Let's give other people the chance to

try out the tips of requesting MS hotfixes. So don't ruin it for everyone else.

Now that I've asked MS for certain patches for Win98 & ME and got them, I too

am moving on with my life.

End of discussion.

Does Microsoft have these updates localized?

For Windows 98 SE Dutch I need a lot of those fixes, but I don't know if they are available anymore in Dutch. Nevertheless I found exescope:

http://hp.vector.co.jp/authors/VA003525/Eindex.htm

Way better than Resource Hacker, so I'll change the entries manually :P

Translated to Dutch so far:

user.exe (4.10.0.2231)

mprserv.dll (4.10.0.2224)

vfwwdm32.dll (4.10.0.2223)

This method does work. I asked MS for Q243220 and they sent to to me, no questions asked. Quick, too - they sent it the day after I emailed. I followed sybesma's script pretty closely.

To: wrhelp@microsoft.com
Subject: Request for fix for KB Q243220

Hi,

My computer is currently running Windows 98 SE, and I'm getting an error message that says this:

The remote server machine does not exist or is unavailable (Error 462)

After searching the Help and Support KB, I found an article titled "COM Internet Services Do Not Work Without ProxyOverride Entry" (Q243220) which mentions my exact problem.

Is there any way you can e-mail me the fix mentioned in the article?

Thanks,

The support email specifically said they were sending me the English version, so I imagine localized versions exist.

you've linked to the wrong patch, horsecharles. The Win98 y2k update 1 is

for Win98 1st edition systems and NOT for Win98 2nd ed.

stuffie699, can you explain further on what version of timedate.cpl file you need.

And are u using Win98 FE (1st edition) or Win98 SE (2nd edition).

Yes, localized editions of Win98/ME hotfixes do exist. You just have to specify

the one provided in your language. if an ms article mentions an 'English' version

of a hotfix, MS should have it in another language such as spanish, dutch or german.

However, it can NOT be the other way around. If a 'specified' language version

of a patch such as the Q320798 kernel32.dll patch is only provided in that language, there can neither be an English version nor any version in other

languages than the one specified in the MS article.

The Q320798 hotfix is for Korean editions of Win98 only and not for non-Korean

versions of Win98. Read MS article 320798 very carefully. So there is NO English

version of the Q320798 patch.

And be sure when requesting hotfixes from MS, you CLEARLY explain the problem

your are having to MS and specify the KB article that best describes your problem AND you mention

the hotfix number that you need. This is so you won't get any further delays from MS support.

CLASYS, I have recently requested the Q290831 patch for Windows ME and will receive it within a day or two. Click on my username to email me when you get the chance if you need the patch.

ms would tell me no

i know for sure

note to soldier1st:

I asked sybesma by email on requesting hotfixes from M$ a few days ago. He says if MS turns you down, you have to send your request again and again until MS gives you the hotfix you specify. Each time you send a request for a hotfix, a different MS support

rep. will respond to your request.

you may want to discuss this with sybesma personally. kudos to sybesma for bringing up the topic on requesting MS hotfixes.

In fact, you often have to ask them twice because it's a 'training issue' shall we say, with India tech support.

Some of them think they aren't allowed to send them and some of them that have been around for a while will send them to you on the first request.

I have never had to ask them a 3rd time yet.

BTW, erp: I got the hotfix you requested, both the server and workstation version were sent to me on the 2nd request.

Never, never allow a first refusal to discourage you.

Like I said, I have never had to ask a 3rd time.

You just have to get to another person there sometimes that is allowed to think for themselves.
