CD key doesn't work after sp2

Recommended Posts

I had a working unattended installation disk & had sp1 & alot of hotfixes & apps working, I created a new disk after having slipstreaming sp2 into a fresh copy of xp pro & it will not take the previous key that I was using or any other that I tried.

what gives ?

Since you're obviously using pirated keys, this is appropriate.

1. This is not a warez site! Links/Requests to warez and/or illegal material (porn, cracks, serials, etc..) will not be tolerated. Discussion of circumventing activation/timebombs/keygens or any other illegal activity will also not be tolerated. If you ignore any of the aforementioned you will receive a final warning. If you choose to continue, you will be banned without notice.

the way you have worded this makes it seem almost certain that you are useing a non legit copy of windows and will probly get flamed. when you start trying "other keys" it seems more likeley to be interupted as you are going to crack sites to get keys instead of maybe owning multiple copies of a legit os cd. microsoft DID black list the more common comprimised keys with sp2

can you install fom your orig or backup copy of your windows cd and then upgrade manualy to the sp2? if after installing a fresh install off your cd and sp2 will not install manualy on top of it there is something wrong with your key and you should call microsoft for another.

what type of xp cd did you make your unattend cd from? was it a oem, retail, or corp?

what type and where did you get your key? IE if you are useing a retail one are you useing the key from the label that comes with it?

the diffrent types of cds do not use the same keys IE if you lost your cd and you are borrowing a backup from a freind and the types of cd and keys dont match (IE corp cd must have corp key retail must have retail key oem must have oem key) it will not work

if you are useing a oem resotre cd there might be issues to

The company where I work & take care of the computers, there are in excess of 20 pc's runnig windows xp pro, some of them are upgraded from win2k, most are new, all with individual licenses all from different points in time as new pc's were purchased, additionaly we keep an audit list in our department so I had access to several keys.

The copy I was using came from a Microsoft Action Pack & the key number was the one provided by Microsoft in that package & it had always worked before. we have computers that get shipped to remote locations & the software is always messed up when they return, it is easier to have an automated installation, that wipes the drive, installs win xp pro, the additional apps we require, give us an audit session so that we can verify operation of all of the software & add any "special requests" & at the end run sysprep so that the key number can be removed. When the system is rebooted, the key number that is on the sticker that is on the machine is installed so that all is legitimate.

People that try to "take things the wrong way" are usually guilty of something themselves, hence the suspicion on others.

I thought this was a forum for help, not rudeness & acusations, as you can see I don't post here often & if this is the kind of help that is offered. I suppose I was incorrect about thinking people here wanted to help others.

If this is an example of the help offered I suppose it is best I don't, because abuse is not what I was after, nor did I expect.

regretfully

Alright, that's enough.

@Dr_Jeff

There are several possibilities. If indeed the keys don't work for someone, the best thing to do would be to phone microsoft and find out why. If they say they've been blocked, so them your paperwork and such that says you bought XP, and they should give you a new key.

As for what could be wrong.....

who knows. Most people assume piracy simply because of SP2 and not accepting a key. It's usually the primary cause. SO I must apologise if you were accused of something you don't do.

I'm sure you're making sure you're typing it in correctly. Perhaps your KEY was only designed for SP1 or something (with Microsoft, anythign is possible) and that you needed a new key. Perhaps it's the fact that the key is from your Action pack. Or it's the upgrade from Windows 2000.

I suggest calling Microsoft and finding out.

My apologies for the false accusation. Unfortunately, you're one of a very small minority who has problems with a legitimate key.

First off, make sure your winnt.sif says ProductKey instead of ProductID, as that changed from SP1 to SP2 (I might have flipped those around, I don't define the CD key in my answer file, so I'm not sure).

Otherwise, do what Alanoll said and call MS about it. If your keys are legitimate, they should be able to help you.

Again, apologies for accusing you. Understand that it was nothing personal, just that 95% of the time it is a pirated key and troubleshooting it is a big pain in the arse ;):P

after having slipstreaming sp2 into a fresh copy of xp pro

And the fresh copy is the right media? There is retail, volume or OEM media, and if your key is a retail key it won't work with volume or oem media, and the other way around.

Just a thought. :blushing:

*EDIT* I see teleri already explained that, maybe I should read the whole topic before replying... :blushing::blushing: *EDIT*

No, this specific key was probably locked in to the SP1 version alone. Moreover, those action pack keys can only be used to activate 5 times or so. More than that, the keys are effectively junk.

And hey.... why these many new posts regarding non-working keys with SP2.... Go to this page - http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechn...oy/wpadepl.mspx

Microsoft offers some keys, and requires an implicit agreement on your part - read that page for details.

@Dr_Jeff

If I understand right, you only use the action pack keys for the sake of having to use a key. Once the install is over, and all other required things are done, the key you used is not of concern to you, since you SysPrep the machine. Is that so?

Well, in that case - visit the page linked to above, to get 14-day trial keys.

Hoping this helps....

As for your other keys which are supposed to work, but don't - well, only MS can answer it.
