svchost keeps crashing (please answer or im dead)

At my parents office, theres a window 2000 machine, which is used for everything business (acounting, ect)

Problem

its svchost process keeps shutting down, and the user(my mother) is hard headed and wont listen at all to what i ever say. now, does anyone know if theres a way to fix this problem and get her off my back? Please replys asap, or i wont hear the end of it.

ps, this is serious, no jokes, just answers

Well, be more specific about the problem, as in what error message dialog does it display? Does it cause the system itself to shut down in 60 seconds?

If the answer to the question is YES, then I suspect you've somehow been hit by the Sasser or a similar worm which attacks the svchost process. Get a removal tool from F-Secure or Symantec or McAfee.

well on xp update there was a fix for this type of virus (its caused by the virus)

anyways I'm not sure but u can try this (I've done it b4 for other reasons and for other services.)

go to services.msc

find Remote Procedure Call (RPC)

go to properties of it

go to recovery tab

there change everything to "take no action"

other thing u can do

put a little batch file on the desktop

like this

[b][prevent.bat][/b]
shutdown -a

though i'm not sure if win2000 had shutdown.exe but i assume u can easily copy it.

but best of choice would be to remove the virus as javagreen mentioned.

symantec has lots of tools for it.
