take a snapshot, then make changes (in your case make the icons smaller) take another snapshot, then save it as a .reg file & import it in cmdlines.txt

RegShot is a small registry compare utility that allows you to quickly take a snapshot of your registry and then compare it with a second one - done after doing system changes or installing a new software product. The changes report can be produced in text or HTML format and contains a list of all modifications that have taken place between snapshot1 and snapshot2. In addition, you can also specify folders (with sub filders) to be scanned for changes as well.

What can I do with REGSHOT?

- Windows itself or some system-optimize program may change your registry,you might wonder what they have done?

- Many suspicious programs left trashes in your registry or in the file system,all those are done without notification!

RegShot can trace what they have done and clean the Mark they left!

You can use UNDOReg to help undo the entries.

Some settings (e.g., desktop icon settings) are only applied to the registry upon logging out. Try using regshot to take a snapshot, apply the desired setting, logging out and back in, then running regshot a second time, and compare. That should show what's going on.

Check out this Microsoft link CRock. I'm using it at my work to create default user profiles on our XP images. It's super easy to get working and setup everything you want. After you do it once, you can log into the local account anytime, make a change, and replace the default profile.

You can load any existing user profile on your PC and make changes to it by launching regedit while logged in as an admin, highlight HKEY_Users, click File then Load Hiv. just browse to the user's folder (make sure to have show hidden files on), and double click the ntuser.dat file there. It contains all the registry entries for that user. give it a name and edit away.

ive tried the reg tweaks, but also some things didnt work, for instance the screen saver is still active, even though its specified to be off during the theme installation and as a separate registry tweak. so im going to just try delete all the screen savers as specified in the original cleanup.cmd

Crock, the best way to import those settings is not the registry but a theme.
Just set-up your computer with all those settings working, and then goto [i]Display[/i] Properties, [i]Theme[/i] Tab, [i]save as...[/i] Button.
And reimport this theme at install.

The reason registry does not work is that when you import the keys, it goes to your profile BEFORE theme manager is loaded.
When it loads, it create your theme (custom or default) and overwrite all your stuff with its own keys it is creating from the theme definition (that you saved, or the default one).

I was only interested in tweaking the CaptionHeight in [HKCU\Control Panel\Desktop\WindowMetrics], but I had to save a whole theme for making it work.
I understood why later by reading gosh's stuff on the question.

I am double-checking a few things and probably tomorrow, I'll post some 'updated' stuff about loading theme.
