I'm Screwed, Please Help

I have an Unattended install disk that works fine through to Windows. I installed it on my new hard drive, since the old drive is gonna be sold to a friend very soon (36GB raptor to my new 74GB raptor)Included in the install are applications, drivers,registry tweaks, settings etc. etc. (Zonealarm 5 Pro included with registration and settings). After booting to desktop, the comp runs slowish for about 3 minutes after which Zonealarm finally loads and my comp resumes at normal speed. Coupled with this problem, however, is that my internet won't work, period. I connect through a router, and I know that when I switch to the old hard drive, the router works fine, and another computer connected wirelessly works too. On my new Unattanded Installed hard drive, I can't get anything. I can't even access the router or ping the router. A friend told me that both the slowdown and this are both some sort of network settings problem. Please help me out? Has anyone had this or know what I am supposed to do, or what changes I should make to my CD. I've been reburning my Unattanded several times, but it seems like the same problem persists. I'm desperate, cus I've tried messing with every settings I know. I do disable a lot of services, but I've matched them to my working computer and found no differences. Thanks in advance.

i dont have any one solution but i would try several things.

first in your unattended file under networking have you changed anything in there.

leave it at default or dont put anything in.

and start over with a new win xp sp1 with just the hotfixes and updates. no silently installed anything. then add your things one at a time till the problem comes up.

i had a problem awhile back and it was my ntoskrnl.exe that was making the problem. because i wanted my own bootscreen to come up. some hotfixes change these system files and if you over write or change them it confuses it.

you mention zonealarm.

try your install without it at all. since it has alot to do with networking.

ive had so many problems with zonealarm i just gave it up.

just some ideas. if i think of anything else ill let ya know..

I essentially took GUIRunOnce out of winnt.sif (so no registry tweaks or applications) and I also took out all the drivers except the basic SATA ones. That gets me through with no problems. I'm now adding in the rest of my drivers, and see if that works. After that I'll add in registry tweaks. and then maybe my apps. We'll see how far I get. You're right that Zonealarm is networking, but I've never actually had a problem with it before. I've never made an Unattanded disk with it before either tho. I'll keep trying and any help or info anyone can provide on what this might be would save me a lot of time and energy. Thanks for the response. Sometimes it feels like you just silently screaming at your computer and even a response makes you feel better and willing to spend more time on it.

I have the same problem, but I'm using Outpost Firewall. I keep my computer in sleep to get pass this thing...

It began last week, before it was ok. I don't know what I've change, but I'm in the process of reinstalling, and hope this will go away...

Okay, I've reburned my Cd several times and narrowed the problem down to the Registry Tweaks. The install with all my drivers worked, once I applied the registry tweaks, I got the error.

You didn't really expect anyone to read that long cut and paste, did you? You've got it narrowed down: remove half the tweaks, if the problem continues, remove half the rest. Repeat until the problem disappears. Then add half of the removed tweaks until it comes back.

Trial and error: always works. It's not as long as you may think: try it with a search in a phone book for a name, and you'll see.

I guess, but it involves a reinstall of windows after each trial. In general, it might take me about 6-7 iterations to narrow it, so I'd be looking at 4-5 hours solid. After which I might still not know which one it is. I understand it was really long and I'm sorry about that. I guess I will try Trial and Error and sorry to post such a long thingie. I was just thinking if something jumped out at someone or if they had had a similar problem before and could pinpoint it quickly. Thanks.

if you think the problem is with registry tweaks, wouldnt it be easier to try the cd without any tweaks, then make a backup of your registry and try each tweak then?

Could it maybe be one of the services you have disabled. I noticed you turned off quite a few. Just a thought.

Just letting you guys know, I fixed the problem. There are actually three errors in the registry services section. You can see them if you look closely. First, I left a semi-colon out in the description before setting one of the services to Manual. I also disabled Ipsec, when the technical term for the service named Ipsec is PolicyAgent. Finally, I had disabled Fast User Switch Compatibility, but left out the 'ing' in switching. After fixing those errors, my cd works perfectly, and I've even integrated Itouch and Mouseware, which I had trouble with before. Thanks so much for the help. Trial and error solved this one in the end. Unattanded has a steep learning curve, but from up here, its pretty **** awesome. Thanks again.
