According to the Microsoft interior news, Windows XP SP2 RTM build locking will be 2178, edition mark: 6.00.2900.2178 (xpsp_sp2_rtm.040730-1822)

That's cool - so it is on the verge of release, I suppose (since 2177 was built 4 days ago, and it looks like 2178 is a proven "test-run"ed build of the same).

But, I wouldn't really say that the number "6.00.2900.2178" means very much, since that looks like an IE build number. "5.1.2600.2178" is more like it.

Quite possible. Remember that they need to have a stress-test run with it prior to release (MS calls it "dog-fooding"). Also, remember the build dates of RC1/RC2 were about 3 days before the day they were released. Same was the story with LongHorn (build 4051) as well - it's build date was 5 days earlier than when it got released at the PDC 2003 (october of that year).
