Registry Tweaks, Part-1

Recommended Posts

I've this tread 2 times, but didn't find how to Show Quick Launch. I have search the whole forum and google too, but there is no information about this. I monitor for the registry changes but can't find anything. :-(

Is there anyone who knows how to do that? Is it record somewhere in the registry or in some file?

The other question is how to remove default Favorites and replace them with mine for all users? I've tried to remove them with batch file, but when I create new user the default favorites are aplied. I put my Favorites in All Users, but they didn't appear in IE. What's wrong in my actions?

And the last one - I try to remove the *.scr in %systemroot%\system32 with batch file as it shown in Prepare.cmd here:

cmdow @ /HID
DEL "%systemroot%\*.bmp"
DEL "%systemroot%\Web\Wallpaper\*.jpg"
DEL "%systemroot%\system32\dllcache\*.scr"
DEL "%systemroot%\system32\*.scr"

DEL "%AllUsersProfile%\Start Menu\Windows Update.lnk"
DEL "%AllUsersProfile%\Start Menu\Set Program Access and Defaults.lnk"
DEL "%AllUsersProfile%\Start Menu\Windows Catalog.lnk"

but it's not working. When I log-in they are there and refuse to be removed. Even I delete them - they appear again.

I realise what GreanMachine explained, that all setings are in hivedef.inf, but when I explore this find just this entries about screensaver:

HKCU,"Control Panel\Desktop","ScreenSaverIsSecure",0x00000002,"0"
HKCU,"Control Panel\Desktop","ScreenSaveTimeOut",0x00000000,"600"
HKCU,"Control Panel\Desktop","ScreenSaveActive",0x00000002,"1"
HKCU,"Control Panel\Desktop","SCRNSAVE.EXE",0x00000002,"%SystemRoot%\System32\logon.scr"

Here I can change the default screensaver to my own, but how to delete other?

I found the section with screensavers, but ...

HKCU,"Control Panel\Screen Saver.3DFlyingObj",,0x00000012
HKCU,"Control Panel\Screen Saver.3DPipes",,0x00000012
HKCU,"Control Panel\Screen Saver.Bezier",,0x00000012
HKCU,"Control Panel\Screen Saver.Marquee","BackgroundColor",0x00000002,"0 0 128"
HKCU,"Control Panel\Screen Saver.Marquee","CharSet",0x00000002,"0"
HKCU,"Control Panel\Screen Saver.Marquee","Font",0x00000000,"%SCREEN_SAVER_MARQUEE_FONT%"
HKCU,"Control Panel\Screen Saver.Marquee","Mode",0x00000002,"1"
HKCU,"Control Panel\Screen Saver.Marquee","Size",0x00000002,"24"
HKCU,"Control Panel\Screen Saver.Marquee","Speed",0x00000002,"14"
HKCU,"Control Panel\Screen Saver.Marquee","Text",0x00000002,"%SCREEN_SAVER_MARQUEE_TEXT%"

HKCU,"Control Panel\Screen Saver.Mystify","Active1",0x00000002,"1"
HKCU,"Control Panel\Screen Saver.Mystify","Active2",0x00000002,"1"
HKCU,"Control Panel\Screen Saver.Mystify","Clear Screen",0x00000002,"1"
HKCU,"Control Panel\Screen Saver.Mystify","EndColor1",0x00000002,"255 255 255"
HKCU,"Control Panel\Screen Saver.Mystify","EndColor2",0x00000002,"255 255 255"
HKCU,"Control Panel\Screen Saver.Mystify","Lines1",0x00000002,"7"
HKCU,"Control Panel\Screen Saver.Mystify","Lines2",0x00000002,"12"
HKCU,"Control Panel\Screen Saver.Mystify","StartColor1",0x00000002,"0 0 0"
HKCU,"Control Panel\Screen Saver.Mystify","StartColor2",0x00000002,"0 0 0"
HKCU,"Control Panel\Screen Saver.Mystify","WalkRandom1",0x00000002,"1"
HKCU,"Control Panel\Screen Saver.Mystify","WalkRandom2",0x00000002,"1"
HKCU,"Control Panel\Screen Saver.Stars","Density",0x00000002,"50"
HKCU,"Control Panel\Screen Saver.Stars","WarpSpeed",0x00000002,"10"

... here is only 6 of 10? Where is the other?

There is so many things that I don't understand, but for now this is enought.

Thanks in advance and excluse my English.

If you don't ever want it to autologin, just don't import the autologon.reg file (i.e remove the line REGEDIT /S autologon.reg from your autologin.cmd file. However, if you are like me and want it to autologin to install some apps and then reboot and not autologin anymore you can do the following. Once you are done with whatever you needed autologin for delete those three registry entries. To do it in a .REG file, you could do this:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon]

Save the above code in a file (e.g. DelAutoLogin.reg) and import it silently using:

REGEDIT /S DelAutoLogin.reg

Becko: this is a 'post your registry hack' thread, i recommend posting questions in seperate thread, otherwise this thread will have hundreds of pages and newbies will have to look through each page to find tweaks.

If you want to remove screen savers, edit shl_img.inf (search the forum). You don't need to edit the registry to install a screensaver (ss), i assume the ss settings in hivedef.inf are custom settings, such as what the scrolling marque ss says.

I don't recommend editing hivexxx.inf's because everytime a new service pack comes out you'll have to manually edit these files.

You don't say when you are running you tweaks, so i dont know why you can't delete the ss and favorites. I would recommend deleting things like ss and favorites on first boot, in GUI mode.

I recommend adding favorites in an unattend file. When you do that the favorites are put in the default user profile, which would fix your problem. Setupmgr will let you do this.

Does anyone know how I set the startmenu to classic / modern

Use DefaultStartPanelOff in winnt.sif under [shell]. This is documented in ref.chm

It does not work (My installation runs the hotfixes + some regtweaks at T13)

After the reboot it shows te internet connection + add user screen

Then it runs the administrator account + guirunonce + reboot

After the reboot I can run an account for the first time (but even with:

it still had the classic start menu)

The default start menu look in XP now is the new style. So to get the win2k style start menu on XP, you'd have to disable the default start menu (I suppose that's clear).

So, you simply have to put DefaultStartPanelOff=Yes. Now it will behave the way you want it to.

There's "DefaultThemesOff=Yes" too, that setting will fetch you back the classic style windows desktop (the one without all the effects and eye-candy).

:EDIT: no, just now saw that you actually want to have your XP-style start menu back. Maybe you have some registry tweak that locks your start menu to classic?

Open the .reg files that you apply during install, and see if you know exactly what every line does. Don't use registry code which isn't properly documented, and delete those parts from the reg tweaks which you don't understand.

I read somewhere here that for "Numlock On" I needed this entry:

;Numlock On

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Keyboard]"InitialKeyboardIndicators"="2"

However, this does not work...!

Very minor annoyance, I know, but does anyone know why it doesn't work?

Hi! I hope you'll help me!

I have some problems with this:

1. I can't enable all Visual Settings. I'm using this reg tweak:

After that all otions are only enabled in "Start\Control Panel\...\Visual Effects" but they aren't really applied!!!

2. Can I put "My computer panel" on Desctop? And place it on the upper side of the desktop, parallel to the "Task panel".

That happens to me too!

All the desired options are checkmarked or disabled as required, but they aren't *applied*. Does anyone have a solution?

You want to put My computer icon on Desktop? And place it on the upper side of the desktop, parallel to the Task panel? You can put this section into winnt.sif, but then, visual styles are removed (you can't have everything):
