Registry Tweaks, Part-1

Recommended Posts

thanks to both of you

I am used the other sounds of xp

I just can't stand the logon logoff startup shutdown

so I'll go with the reg tweak since I haven't got my hands on the hive*.inf files.

I don't want to mess the whole xp setup by messing the hives :)

Is there a way to make the Web/Home button on my Internet Keyboard load up IE - but with the -nohome command option by default?

I tried editing [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Clients\StartMenuInternet\IEXPLORE.EXE\shell\open\command], but that didn't seem to work.

Im having a small problem. all of the following registry tweaks work but the last 2 to change the folder view. I thought that I had cracked it looking at greenmachines earlier post but it not working.

I want to have view as list an show the status bar. If possible I would like this applied to all folders.

the last bit doens't even work when you double click on the file or choose import.

by the way this is called in cmdlines.txt

  • 2 weeks later...

in xp you can prioritize device IRQs to improve performance

open the system information utility (msinfo32.exe) ..to view your systems IRQs navigate to Hardware Resources\IRQs

open regedit and navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\PriorityControl

create a new DWORD value called IRQ#Priority, where # would be the IRQ of the device to prioritize (for example IRQ8Priority for IRQ 8, your system CMOS).

double-click the new value, and enter a number for its priority.. enter 1 for top priority, 2 for second, and so-on.. make sure not to enter the same priority number for two entries.. keep it simple at first by experimenting with only one or two values.. good results can be achieved by prioritizing IRQ 8 (the system CMOS) and the video cards corresponding IRQ

export your settings to a reg file and add them to your reg tweaks

reboot your machine

Here's a warning - the code below is NOT compatible with all computers. Use this at your own risk. If you have an ATi video card and 1GB of ram or more the tweak "LargeSystemCache=dword:00000001" will cause serious data corruption. Its happened to me. The L2 cache "tweak" has proven useless. Install it if you wish, but it has absolutely ZERO effect. Its a leftover from Windows NT days when L2 cache was off-die.

;RAM usage tweaks
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management]
"DisablePagingExecutive"=dword:00000001
"LargeSystemCache"=dword:00000001
"IoPageLockLimit"=dword:1bf00000
"SecondLevelDataCache"=dword:00000100

;AMD Processor Fix
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management]
"LargePageMinimum"=dword:ffffffff

The IRQ priority "tweak" (posted before this one) also does absolutely nothing. Again, I've had it enabled in the registry and it doesn't seem to do any harm, but it doesn't do any good either.

The 2nd level data cache and IRQ "tweaks" are probably the two most common useless-tweaks I see all over the internet!
