stew Posted July 3, 2004 Share Posted July 3, 2004 Hey all,I have just finsihed installing Windows Server 2003 on my machine at home. I have a few questions about how best to set the machine up for what I need to do with it. Basically I need to be able to stream music and movies from the server to my computer connected up to my tv and also to my laptop which is connected to the wireless network, having looked at the server roles it would appear that setting it up as a streaming server would be the best thing to do, but I was unsure of how it would impact other server roles I would use and if it would be better to set a server role as a file server (which I'll need to do anyway to share many of the files that I need) and let each machine authenticate with the server and jsut open the files up in the media player of choice on the client machine. Is it possible to auto-authenticate users and how would I do this? I'd also like to be able to set the machine up to take automatic backups of specific folders from other machines on the network at a set inerval, every 7 days would be perfect I think, however the other machines are running XP Home and 1 is an XP Pro machine, is this a problem or not?Finally is it possible to hook up a 2nd ethernet card and define specific applciations to run using a specific network card, for instance I would like to be able to specify all media streaming be conducted through 1 network card along with an FTP server program and set every other application to route through the other network card? stew Posted July 3, 2004 Author Share Posted July 3, 2004 Yeah thats what I meant by upgrading, would never do an upgrade after trying Windows 95 to 98 (first Edition) and failing miserably.I avoid Home editions but when the machines are old OEMs (2 Dell, 1 Compaq) you have to be careful about drivers. catwalker63 Posted July 3, 2004 Share Posted July 3, 2004 For me it was wfw 3.11 to 95. Have you ever installed 95 with floppies? Have you checked the Dell/Compaq websites for drivers for Pro for your machines? Or an upgrade path? You may luck out. At the very least you may be able to back it down to a Win2k Pro -- preferable to the Home edition because of the networking capabilities. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

LOL) that was... eventful.Compaw website is of no use to anybody, not checked the Dell site in a while I might be able to find the drivers I need.
