My favorite browser is...

I'm a huge supporter of Firefox (when 1.0 was released, I actually burned 100 Firefox CDs and distributed for free!)
But I had always used Opera- way since Win 3.11. In fact, although Firefox is set to my default browser, when I normally surf, I use Opera.

I dunno why, but I guess its because Opera, inspite of including 100s of features (and inventing most of them along the way), still remains to be small, fast and light.

It has a very 'smooth' touch and feel to it, like the feeling you get when you know you are using a quality, branded product. And no, its not the skin/theme. Its something else, and I'm not quite able to pinpoint it...

The integrated mail client (with Gmail like features), nice RSS aggregator, IRC etc have become an integral part of my daily usage, and it would be quite difficult to do without them. Basically Opera acts as an excellent all-in-one solution; it does it well and it does it good. Of course, I know that Firefox can do all that with extensions; or I can even use the Mozilla suite.

But I still resort to Firefox when I need to 'get down and dirty'. For eg, for modifying/manipulating HTTP headers, debugging web pages, etc, Firefox is quite handy in that regard. Things like the Smilie pack, BBcode plugin, AutoCopy and many more are amongst the plugins I use frequently.

And about the speed, well I've tweaked Firefox (using Firetune and manually) and page loading is as fast (if not faster) than Opera. But still, starting Firefox takes a lot more time as compared to Opera. I know I can of course tweak all that and do this that and make Fx load faster; but I think the reason why I prefer Opera is that it works out of the box. It just works.

Now weighing the pros and cons, both the browsers have their fair share of advantages and disadvantages. Also, quoting numbers in this regard is quite useless. In the end it boils down to the users choice. We can't dictate people what to use and what not to. What matters is that we have quality alternatives available now.

So Firefox and Opera fans, lets come together, stop fighting amongst ourselves, and lets KICK SOME IE BUTT!

I think I can honestly say this is the best post anyone's made in this thread. This is what I mean when I say a simple "this rules" post just doesn't count. You nailed it Dexter.

Hi All,
I use Deepnet. It gives all you need, tabbed browsing etc. Plus it has anti-phishing which is updated quite regularly. It's one of the lesser known I know. It also has Peer to Peer which can be disabled if you don;t want it. All in all a really nice browser based on IE but with most of what's wanted.

Really great post [deXter].

I guess a simple solution would be to give users a copy of Firefox and Opera on a cd and let them choose.

I'm really looking forward to Firefox 1.1, which should be matching Opera in terms of rendering speed. Also there is the [url="https://sourceforge.net/projects/ffpreloader/"]Firefox Preloader[/url], which has some potential.

Hey [deXter],

I'll agree with Jeremy and DigeratiPrime in that your post is among the top 5, if not the best, of this thread.

I completely agree with you that Opera has that "well-oiled-machine" feel to it sometimes that you have to fight with Firefox to get (even though I've never been able to get it quite the same).

When I tell people to get a non-IE based browser, I too point them towards Firefox and say that if they don't like it at first, ask me how to help them get it to the way that they do like it. It takes a bit of work, but it's worth it in the end. At least for a first step. I tell them about Opera as well and all the features of it, but most people aren't willing to pay $39 for something that they don't care about.

IMO, anything but plain old IE. Maxthon is my number 3 choice after Opera and Firefox.

Cheers!

  • 2 weeks later...

im with you firefox/opera guys. i used to use opera back in the 5,6 and 7 days but didnt like the newest verison (either 7 or 8, i cant remember whichone, it was the one where the integrated that stupid sidebar in) after i saw the newest version (which was 8 then i think) and didnt like it i remembered that i had firefox .98 on HDD and decided to try it, it had the feel of opera that i liked, a massive amount of plugins (new ones created everyday or so), and the search box. ever since then ive stuck with firefox, using 1.04 now. the thing like someone else said is opera costs $39 while firefox is free and opensource, and they pretty much have the same features (whether it be fully integrated or plugins). im stickin with the fox :) and oh yea IE can go to hell! i only use it when firefox wont display the pages correctly (the page is an ASP or uses ActiveX, or some other MS technology that is specific for IE)

[quote name='kurt476' date='May 20 2005, 07:40 AM']Netscape has IE and Mozilla and firefox combined :)
[right][post="323927"][/post][/right][/quote]

Mind backing this up with some reasoning? Just saying that Netscape is better doesn't help someone who's looking for an alternative to their current browser.

Features? Pros? Cons? Expandability?

Thats a horrible summary. :puke: But even Netscape doesnt explain it too well on there own site.

[quote]Finally a Browser that Fits Every Site
• Netscape Browser 8 gives you access to the best of Internet Explorer, traditional Netscape and the new capabilities also offered by Firefox.
• Netscape Browser 8 offers the best of both worlds by combining the intuition of Firefox with the user-friendly capabilities of Internet Explorer.[/quote]

Netscape isnt better, they built it on Firefox 1.0.3, and shipped it with the bug that thundered the news for about a week. Firefox 1.0.4 came out immediately, and unlike netscape has extensions.

Netscape isn't winning me over just because its updated. I'm sticking with Firefox. It gets better everyday and they work so hard to make it the best they can, I know where my loyalities lie.

The one thing I is when I visit some web pages they say I'm running Netscape when I actually running Firefox 1.0+. This is because Firefox is based on Netscape, and now Netscape is based on Firefox.

Firefox - GREAT!
Thunderbird - NOT SO GREAT!

If you guys haven't been around back then, heres how I think the browsers evolved:

WorldWideWeb (Was a program; renamed Nexus, 1990)
|
ViolaWWW (Based on Nexus)
|
NCSA Mosaic (Based on Viola)
|
End of Mosaic -> Most of the codebase -> Internet Explorer
|
Mosaic Communications Set Up -> Internal Codename "Mozilla" -> Netscape born -> Netscape 1,2,3,4 -> Mozilla (Open Source, based on N4)

Mozilla (Open source) -> Netscape (6,7) | Firefox | & other Gecko browsers
Firefox -> Netscape 8+
