Ascii2 Posted February 26 Posted February 26 (edited) After using some of the current releases of @roytam1's browsers (including Thunderbird derivative clients) I notice much improvement. After updating from the mailnews.win32-20240127-e95fad7d-uxp-35252384aa-xpmod.7z build of MailNews, the frequent but intermittent MailNews trouble with laggy or delayed displaying of email content appears resolved (a problem that has been manifesting for at least four months). Ascii2 Posted February 26 Posted February 26 (edited) @roytam1: I am re-reporting (now with pictures) a MailNews problem that has not been resolved: The "Attachments" Preferences tab does not fully display the chrome://messenger/content/preferences/applications.xul contents. The top part of the content is cut off and "Incoming" and "Outgoing" tabs are hidden. To toggle the tabs, in the Content Type list, select the Action of the last list item (you might need to click multiple times for the selection to happen), then type Ctrl+Tab (there are other ways to go about it too). Here are some pictures for comparison: Picture of the MailNews Preferences window with the "Incoming" tab of the Attachments tab active: Picture of the MailNews Preferences window with the "Outgoing" tab of the Attachments tab active: Picture of the Icedove-UXP Options window with the "Incoming" tab of the Attachments tab active: Picture of the Icedove-UXP Options window with the "Outgoing" tab of the Attachments tab active: As an additional note, the Incoming tab of the Attachments tab of the Preferences dialog box for the MailNews application, does not display the correct "Desktop" icon for the "Save files to" option. [EDIT: This is true initially. After browsing for a folder the icon then appears (presumably is cached).] UPDATE: This is is apparently consistent with how Thunderbird does things, but that a preference that the Attachments Pane behavior is conditional against is set differently by default in MailNews than in Thunderbird. See https://msfn.org/board/topic/185966-my-browser-builds-part-5/?do=findComment&comment=1262383 for more detail. Edited April 8 by Ascii2 1
AstroSkipper Posted February 26 Posted February 26 (edited) @roytam1 I observed a problem when using uBlock Origin in MailNews. It doesn't matter whether using the original version uBlock Origin Legacy 1.16.4.31b2 or my mod uBlock Origin Legacy 1.16.4.33. In uBlock's dashboard page "Settings", the button "Back up to file" doesn't work. Same problem with the "Export" button under "My filters" and the "Export to file" button under "My rules". Do you have any idea why? On the other hand, the "Restore from file" and the "Import" buttons are working correctly. Is the function that these buttons call up possibly not available in MailNews or blocked for security reasons? PS: I get on the pages with the "Restore from file" and the "Import" buttons the error message "Error: TypeError: details is null" in the Error Console. Here is, for example, a screenshot of the Error Console when loading the "Settings" page in the most recent version of MailNews: Edited February 26 by AstroSkipper Update of content 3
basilisk-dev Posted February 26 Posted February 26 (edited) On 2/19/2024 at 6:53 PM, VistaLover said: on that note, it's sad that Basilisk-Dev has admitted elsewhere that he's withholding on purpose to publish Bk code in its master branch until "the very last moment", so that "we" here be incapable of using it "ahead of time"...). I am not doing this, I considered doing it to prevent buggy code being pushed to roytam1's users, but I never decided to actually go forward with it. What's sad is that roytam1 continues to release code to his users that has not been verified as production ready. Code in the master branch of upstream UXP or upstream Basilisk is not always production ready. I have seen issues reported on MSFN for roytam1's builds because he was pulling code from master branches before they were ready. He is doing a disservice to his users by giving them potentially buggy code. Edited February 26 by basilisk-dev 5
modnar Posted February 27 Posted February 27 If I may chime in - basilisk-dev: while that may be true, we never experienced major problems with roytam1's releases and even if we did have some crashes, they were resolved rather quickly and painlessly. All I can say is that we can be thankful for your and roy's efforts and we should work together to push development of better classic browser forward, even for us that are cemented in the "old" system which may be unpopular, but it sure is fun to have it as daily driver even now, when all the world is crazy for excessive data sharing and automatic idiots. 6

Code in the master branch of upstream UXP or upstream Basilisk is not always production ready. I have seen issues reported on MSFN for roytam1's builds because he was pulling code from master branches before they were ready. He is doing a disservice to his users by giving them potentially buggy code. I don't know that it's necessarily "sad," but it is true. "Old-timers" on these threads are aware that these builds often include new features (and some old features - e10s) that aren't fully debugged. It's a double-edged sword; we're often the first to get fixes to longstanding bugs too (remember webp?), so there is an upside. I think it's fine as long as you know what you're getting, but "newbies" who stumble onto these builds may not fully appreciate that, so they may run into problems on occasion. Luckily for them, this thread exists to help them out, and Roytam has always been quick to revert any changes that caused unforeseen problems. Personally, I don't anxiously download every week's release. I let others be the canaries in the coal mine. And even then, I always keep my previous download as a backup, since things occasionally go sideways with new releases. I encourage others to do the same. 3

Hello Mathwiz, your motto: Quote I let others be the canaries in the coal mine. is "truly heroic" !? Since using the latest browsers by RoyTam1 is not a question of "life and death", woudn't it be a little more productive if you muster your courage and lend a helping hand with this project ? Where are the DEAD CANARIES ?? The World Belongs to the Brave - so let's go on ! Edited March 3 by anton12 3

Ascii2 Posted March 4 Posted March 4 (edited) @roytam1, I report some BNavigator bugs (my currently used build is 20240223 of version 0.9.8714a1 (32-bit)): Bug 1: The "Open Web Location..." menu item is not shown in Bnavigator at all, but Open Web Location functionality still is accessible other than via menu item (use Ctrl+Shift+L keyboard shortcut to bring up dialog box). It is notable that the "Open Web Location..." menu item is present and can be accessed via in SeaMonkey and Iceape-UXP. In those browsers, the menu item is located in the first section of the "File" menu. The "Open Web Location..." functionality can no longer be accessed without the use of a keyboard (such as by mouse). Perhaps the menu item was removed (accidentally?) when removing menu items relating to the SeaMonkey suite that are not used by the Browser component (such as the items that relate to email client, Composer, Address Book, etc.). I tried using userChrome.css to make the "Open Web Location..." menu item visible, but it failed. Perhaps the menu item is missing completely. EDIT UPDATE: It appears that the The "Open Web Location..." functionality is intact and available except that the insertion of the File menu item for "Open Web Location..." has been unfortunately commented out by Developer Tobin. In the source page of chrome://navigator/content/navigatorOverlay.xul (chrome\navigator\content\navigator\navigatorOverlay.xul in the omni.ja file), the relevant code is commented out and appears as: [Forum errors when trying to post the information, so it has not been posted. Please instead search the file for (contents between the quotes) "<!-- XXXTobin: Get rid of this".] After un-commenting the removing the code, the UI elements are restored and usable, but only on new profiles. Existing profiles remain on the old behavior. Bug 2: The "Go" toolbar button, which is used to run the URL bar contents, is not shown at all, but the URL bar contents may still be run via keyboard shortcut (Only while having the URL bar already selected, the Enter keyboard shortcut may perform the run action). The "Go" navigation button functionality can no longer be accessed without the use of a keyboard (such as by mouse). This is also true of the dedicated "Search" navigation button (which operates against the Location Bar/Urlbar contents); however, it is less severe because of the existence of the optional dedicated search bar item that incorporates its own search button. The "Go" button does not display at all. I tried using userChrome.css to make the Go button visible, but it failed. Perhaps the Go button is missing completely. EDIT UPDATE: It appears that the Go button and Search Button functionalities are intact and available except that the default inclusion of those intractable items have been commented out by Developer Tobin. In the source page of chrome://navigator/content/navigator.xul (chrome\navigator\content\navigator\navigator.xul in the omni.ja file), the relevant code is commented out and appears as: [Forum errors when trying to post the information, so it has not been posted. Please instead search the file for (contents between the quotes) "<!-- XXXTobin: These need to be exterminated".] Given the "These need to be exterminated" comment, it would appear that the developer had great prejudice against these accessible navigation buttons. (I would speculate that the developer disliked the late 1980's or early 1990's style/appearance that the buttons have.) After un-commenting the removing the code, the UI elements are restored and usable, but only on new profiles. Existing profiles remain on the old behavior. Bug 3: Set default browser does not work correctly or fully. When setting default browser (using the "--setDefaultBrowser" command line argument), a Desktop shortcut is created, but the browser is not configured to be the system default. Many of roytam1's browsers do not set default browser correctly and can make other changes (which I think happened when I last tested roytam1's K-Meleon browser). It would be good to have the default browser/application options working correctly for all major roytam1 releases. ---------------------------------------------------------------- Seem like Bugs but Not sure if Bugs; should bring to roytam1 attention: Seems Like Bug 1: The throbber icon is invisible. The icon still exists and can still be interacted with. I think that it would good to for the throbber icon to actually have something to visibly see. It would make accidentally clicking it more difficult, particularly, if one does not remember where it is placed. Edited May 8 by Ascii2 1
Mathwiz Posted March 4 Posted March 4 (edited) @anton12, your hostility mystifies me! (We are talking about Web browsers here. Unlike the canaries of the past, nobody dies. It's just a metaphor.) Posting on this thread does not obligate anyone to be a beta tester for @roytam1's browser builds. Some have taken on this task, but voluntarily. I appreciate their efforts, but I see no reason why I should be expected to join them. I have my own interests, which I will pursue as I see fit. As Billy Joel sang many years ago, "this is my life; go ahead with your own life, and leave me alone!" (Or - less politely - MYOFB.) Now - on to a (hopefully) more interesting topic. On another thread, this was brought up: On 2/26/2024 at 6:01 PM, VistaLover said: The [pdf.js] library inside the latest Serpent 52 build is of version "1.7.348-git-754c4bd", committed on 2017-03-04.... 7 years ago seems pretty old to me! So I started wondering if newer versions would work. I found that pdf.js is contained in file omni.ja, so it's not super easy to replace the code, but it is possible. So as a test, I downloaded and extracted version 1.8.188, and replaced path chrome/pdfjs/content in omni.ja with that "newer" (by 1 month) code. It seems to work, although I saw no obvious differences between 1.7.348 and 1.8.188. Still, the fact that it didn't just blow up in my face is encouraging. I plan to try progressively newer versions to see how far we can push pdf.js before being stopped by some JS feature not yet implemented in UXP. Stay tuned.... Edited March 4 by Mathwiz 2
Ascii2 Posted March 4 Posted March 4 (edited) @roytam1, I report some issues with BNavigator and extensions (my currently used build is 20240223 of version 0.9.8714a1 (32-bit)). The problem does not manifest with the browser's Bookmarks toolbar Icon nor from icons from other extensions like uBlock Origin 1.16.4.31 and User Agent Switcher 0.7.3.1-signed.1-signed. The original Greasemonkey for Pale Moon 3.31.4 extension, with only a Targets mod for installation compatibility, also manifests the problem. I have not tested the Greasemonkey for Pale Moon 3.31.4 in SeaMonkey or derivative browsers, other than BNavigator. The testing in those other browsers is not as straightforward but can be done; it would first require a method to get the icon onto the status bar (modifying the extension to specifically place it, using an extension that provides for adding of user chosen icon(s), etc.). Here are some before and after pictures of adding the Greasemonkey icon to the BNavigator statusbar to illustrate: The extension is described and offered for download at: https://msfn.org/board/topic/182647-my-browser-builds-part-3/page/102/#comment-1212513 AND https://o.rthost.win/boc-uxp/index.php?sort=date&order=desc . Direct Link to extension: https://o.rthost.win/boc-uxp/greasemonkey-3.31.4-pm_sm_ia_bn.xpi (EDIT: For those wondering, this extension does otherwise work well for SeaMonkey-based browsers.)
