If Google pulls the plug with Chromium next year, it's only a matter of time before programs like Discord, WhatsApp, Steam and Spotify and most the new launchers like Rockstar Games Launcher/Epic Games just stop working since you can't disable auto-updates

Already happened in November of 2022, Google had pulled the plug.

Personally I feel like Windows 7 is somewhat usable in 2023, however I wouldn't use it for anything sensitive like banking due to the obvious security risks. As well as that, Chrome is dropping support for Windows 7, which is kind of a deal breaker for me as I have to use the G Suite for school and it doesn't run properly on Firefox.

"obvious security risks" are debatable depending on context and non-obvious by essence.

Fair point. It's generally recommended though that for banking you need an up-to-date computer. Even the UK government recommends you don't use Windows 7 for banking. https://www.forbes.com/sites/daveywinder/2020/01/13/windows-7-warning-intelligence-agency-says-dont-use-for-banking-or-email/?sh=7f2316c532e9

I'm getting a new computer soon (an optiplex 9010 with a i7-3770) that will work very well with windows 7 (I just need the install disc for it)

You will need to limit your memory to 4GB for Windows 7 x64 until after installation is complete.  I have a Windows 7 x64 installation current to August 2018 that I was able to get from Microsoft.  It saved a lot of update time, but it still has the memory bug.

Nobody prevents from installing Linux (preferably Arch with installing Firejail for additional sandboxing) into Oracle VirtualBox or VMware Player onto Windows 7 if this is of concern, then make Linux to be "a browser" with using Chrome/Chromium in it. The main upperside is 0.00% spying, maximum security, extremely fast updates. For other stuff, like gaming, I'll say Windows 7 is still totally fine, most of the time the "Windows 10 only" system requirements are false.

Yes, this is hungrier on resources, but I don't see a decent alternative in our situation in regards to Google. Do you?

Here you have some Search Engines, alternatives I use recently:

https://swisscows.com/en?culture=en

http://www.frogfind.com/

https://private.sh/

https://search.norton.com/

https://lite.qwant.com/?l=en

https://searx.space/ doesn't work... why

https://metasearx.com/

https://searx.tiekoetter.com/

https://searx.be/

- about - Searx: Create Your Own Private Meta Search Engine: https://medevel.com/searx/

- about - https://searx.github.io/searx/

- about - https://docs.searxng.org/

etc etc to search... but "privacy doesn't exist"...

Just a short review for each.

Swisscows is just a Bing front-end like DDG.

Frogfind does partial searching on terms but does support quotes. Seems to be a good site for getting results on an older computer but the issue then is that it is delivering results that would not work for said older computers.

Private.sh has the country sort that (like other sites that have it) does not work as you'd expect. It doesn't just search sites in that country which is something I'm really interested in but have yet to find. For example, if you search in Japanese and select the French Canada option, it will still show English language sites from the US in the results. Missing some countries like China, Taiwan, Philippenes, Ukraine, etc but since the country search doesn't actually filter by country it isn't that important I guess.

Norton search has too many includes being used. Searching on there opens in a new tab and is using Ask (previously Ask Jeeves) and requires filtering many domains to let the site work. Too much effort.

Metasearx has a file search but tries to connect to piratebay apparently. It times out and gives an error. The other non-web options are the same, on Images it hooks into Bing and Google. It is not searching full terms either, under Music, News and Science it is returning incorrect results for the term entered while General search had correct results.

Search term used for testing: ぴーぶいせん (chosen because this does not yield proper results on Mercari or Yahoo Auctions Japan)

Cool, thank you @Tripredacus!

Finally I can broaden my horizons when I want to know more about search engines, thanks again!
I know a lot more search engines... BUT on the web you have to be careful, because you can come across fake search engines, or those that look for porn, or directly for malware, specifically giving links with malware, etc... the best is to stop looking for them and use only some of the most known ones, like the ones I have passed... I don't mention DuckDuckGo or StartPage because they are well known...
In fact, I rarely use them (use Swisscows recently), I prefer to use my bookmarks, which is enough for me.

i am using windows 7 for basically most of my life.
Back when it was still the newest and all the way up until now.
In the end all we can do is extend its lifespan by probably 2025 at most.
My best guess is that after that windows 7 will no longer be suitable for most people as their daily driver OS

Nothing lasts forever so enjoy it while you still can
