how to get the best performance on windows xp?

I used to disable services many years ago on old PC that ran XP, but I wasn't impressed. Was much happier with results from overclocked CPU and GPU.

XP appears inherently slow in some areas. Not long ago I was decompressing files from external USB HDD to internal HDD, some FreeArc packed stuff. The overall impact on computer responsiveness was great. Note that the destination disk wasn't even the one containing the OS.

Was browsing the internet (at the slower pace, page loads being delayed by few seconds there and there) and when I wanted to restore minimized KeePass to look something up in my KeePass database, I watched its window sloooooowly repaint. It should have been instant.

Then there's Direct3D. Anything D3D that runs in a window will slow down as soon as a single pixel intersects with another screen that is not the one it was bound to. Maybe the D3D problem still exists on Vista/7 with XPDM graphics drivers? Don't know about that case.

XP being XP I guess.

what hardware it was? How much ram, what cpu, gpu, hdd etc. I had exactly opposite experience on my systems and never had those issues. Sounds you had no proper video drivers/ones provided were bad or just bad luck.

I'd use <warez> And YES they are in English or any other language.

I usually remove all unneeded with nLite before the installation .

These are the services I remove (completely) . You may just copy/paste into your nLite preset Last Session.ini.

;# Services #

Alerter

Automatic Updates

Error Reporting

Messenger

QoS RSVP

Quality of Service (QoS)

Remote Registry

Telnet

Text Services Framework

WebClient

My nLite Services are currently as follows -

;# Services #
Alerter
Application Layer Gateway
Beep Driver
Distributed Link Tracking Client
DNS Client
Error Reporting
Fax Service
Indexing Service
Messenger
Remote Registry
Route Listening Service
RPC Locator
Secondary Logon
Service Advertising Protocol
Simple TCP/IP Services
System Restore Service
TCP/IP NetBIOS Helper
Telnet

My list of Services via My Computer -> Manage -> Computer Management -> Services does not list QoS RSVP, Quality of Service (QoS), or Text Services Framework so I may have removed those elsewhere with nLite.

I do list WebClient and it is listed as Status = Started and Startup Type = Automatic  --  I have not tried disabling the WebCient service.

Intel Celeron 2,00 GHz (eventually overclocked to 2,5 GHz), 256 MB RAM, eventually upgraded to 1 GB, NVIDIA GeForce4 MX 440, HDD - unknown Maxtor 60 GB, which eventually had to be replaced, got a 80 GB model then, this one died at one point as well, don't remember the year, but the entire timespan of that computer's service was 2001-2009.

Thinking about it now, I don't think it was actually that slow, it might have been just my crazy expectations, probably that disk just couldn't fetch data fast enough for everything to open instantly plus there was this quirk, taskbar always remained frozen for at least a minute after startup. And we ran a freaking anti-virus then, first Norton AntiVirus 2002, then switched to ESET NOD32. The stupid old me surely didn't think of that, I was disabling services, even COM ports in Device Manager, but not an antivirus. Though NOD32 was supposedly non-intrusive.

Anyway, the only speed related optimization that I'd do on XP is running TCP Optimizer. Windows XP and below are tuned for slower internet connections and there's no automagic function adjusting parameters dynamically. Find some website with higher resolution images and watch how fast they are appearing before and after.

Maxtor 60 GB,

I had nothing but bad luck with Maxtor hard disk. Same applies to later quantum disks. I had one with only half capacity left due bad blocks and consider I actually used it few more years despite it:blink:. Definitely no data integrity on that pc:D

I had similar on my Pentium 4. Pointed finger all expect av before ditched av for good

need try that at somepoint. Always left nic as default (expect with powersave and sleep disabled) and blocked scripts on browser. Maybe that will also increase downloading speeds too that feels slow compared my internet and hardware. On slower machines had faster dl under linux. Never knew about that nic thing

For testing pure single-connection network speed, use a plain HTTP or FTP transfer, so that the performance isn't bottlenecked by SSL, scaling of graphics or Javascript. For example, http://speedtest.tele2.net/ Upload can be tested on its FTP (not all of the are up). Browsers usually spam many connections, and wouldn't be as affected. The default TCP settings are definitely artificially limited. Adjust according to the speed & memory of the computer. Probably no need to go as high as the optimizer would suggest, as it assumes all servers of interest are somewhere in Australia. 128K to 512K windows, no more.

WebClient is just so not needed . It's a gremlin . It will waste your traffic. Try , you may like it .

Your claim for wasted traffic seems FALSE.

But it DECREASES my service-count by one so I guess that's enough for me to disable it.

Any proof ? BTW , why do you still try to start a conversation with me, if you're almost always not satisfied with what I say , it never ceases to amaze me. Oh , and even though I'm not 18 y.o. , my eyesight is OK , no need for CAPS, really.

For one, I have no idea why you seem to be wanting to start a fight with me.  This seems EXTREMELY out-of-the-blue on this end.

WHO CARES if I accent with CAPS on occasion - "get over it", it's got NOTHING to do with YOU, it's just the way that I communicate, it might be your EGO that made it "about you".

For two, I was SIMPLY pointing out that I saw no TRAFFIC with WebClient running.

BUT that I was THANKING you for providing me with one LESS service running on my machine.

So, in closing, THANKS AGAIN for that one LESS service  :cheerleader:

I don't connect my two XP systems to the internetz, and therefore can remove the most important cpu-cycle- and io-eater there is: Antivirus. This also means, shoutdown the update service, 'course... :-)

One of my two XP-systems has two NICs, one for XP and solely internal connection (blocked from internet on my router, and on VLAN separated from my other boxes except for one), while my other OS on that machine (W10 64bit) has that NIC disabled, and connects to internetz via a 10GBit NIC - which XP cannot make use of (i need not explain why, i guess... :-) ). My other machine carrying XP has W98SE as its primary OS, where both systems use the same NIC, and are on that locked VLAN mentioned above as well. Fixed IP-Adresses and such, speeds up W98SE, of course, but also XP to a small degree.

If you're finished with insults and lengthy off-topic nonsense , I suggest you get back on-topic and provide us with the proof . In the previous post you said "my claims for wasted traffic" are "false" , we are still waiting for the proof (screenshots , tests , etc). In the meantime , educate yourself regarding this service. For example , these articles seems to be interesting , it definitely eats away someone's traffic , not in 100% of cases, of course. But from my experience , it does and often . (on XP , 7 and Vista too).

In the future , please refrain from discussing my person , my ego , political views , my appearance and the such . This is none of your concern , thank you .
