* some embedded updates have no custom equivalent:

  • few IE updates, including the latest for IE6/7/8
  • DST and Timezones updates
  • RDP KB3020338
  • IME KB2991963
  • v2 of KB4089453 and KB4487085
  • TLS 1.2 updates KB4019276, KB4459091, KB4467770
  • 2019-03/2019-04 updates

an observation from me about KB3020338 - that patch is actually an oleaut32.dll bugfix and not related to RDP; on the other hand, KB3020388 is an RDP patch but is for Win7/Server 2008 R2 only and does not exist for xp embedded.  while there is no custom xp equivalent of KB3020338, it is superseded by KB4466388 (which does have a custom xp patch) and KB4493563 which have newer oleaut32.dll files

Will these links go down tomorrow or will they continue for some time? Since all this at this time May 8, 2021 17:26 UTC is still online.

There are very old updates for XP or 2000 that are still online over including v3-19990518, which were approximated to the release of Windows 98 Second Edition. And the service Pack 4 for Windows 2000 is still stored in these links, however if we go to the original link it is down.

Idk either, so I have already downloaded all of the updates to be safe, which took me ~20 hours straight... MS might one day decide to "retire" (aka delete) them as they have already announced they would be removing all SHA-1 signed files from their website. (But then again, maybe the most recent POSReady 2009 updates won't be deleted so soon since I believe some are dual-signed with SHA-2 e.g. KB4493435 and are also available on the Microsoft Update Catalog).

Newest updates on MS files removal: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/lifecycle/announcements/sha-1-signed-content-retired and https://techcommunity.microsoft.com/t5/windows-it-pro-blog/microsoft-to-use-sha-2-exclusively-starting-may-9-2021/ba-p/2261924 - of note is old .NET Framework installers will be removed on July 26, 2021 and SHA-1 Root Certification Authority will expire on May 9, 2021.

Total folder size ~230 GB (!!) - for ALL updates (of all languages) in all the .CSV files.

Want to add this, because it is missed by a lot of people but there was a separate IE for Embedded OS. This IE does not work properly on retail OS and the retail IE does not work on the Embedded OS. As such, the updates are different and you should be very careful when crossing them. IE should not be treated like the OS where people cross channel the updates. For example, using retail IE on the Embedded OS would result in portions of the OS not working. This is only really an issue for XP and Vista related embedded OS. I do not know anyone who has tested embedded updates for IE on retail IE on retail OS, so it is impossible to know if they even work even if they do not cause a problem. And considering that times are changed from back then, it may be impossible to test properly since websites are not built for those browsers anymore.
