Windows NT 4.0 and gainward 6800 gt 256mb glitching

Recommended Posts

I have been building quadboot (Windows ME, win2000, xp and nt4 sp6) system with following specs: Asus p4p800 motherboard, 2x512mb ram, Gainward geforce 6800 gt golden sample 256 mb agp, Pentium 4 2.80ghz, dvd drive and cd drive. On nt4 side all went fine until installed Nvidia forceware 77.72 driver. After reboot screen was disorted like on picture I attached. NT4 boots fine on VGA mode and gpu got no issues. I did run 3dmark on xp and 98 side and worked fine so gpu is not faulty. On bios I have enabled limit cpuid value and disable hyperthreading and I tried older drivers too. Also nic (3com LOM 3C940) keeps giving DHCP error even works fine on xp or 98 side. I used nic driver off asus cd. Anyone else had issues on 6xxx card under nt4?

It seems to me like you already pinpointed the issue, those drivers are not good (at least on your board).

Have you tried the VBEMP driver?

VBEMP drivers lack 3d accerlation and also wont allow some refresh rates (over 60hz) so would want make any nvidia driver to work

Yep, I know.

The 77.72 is strangely listed as having been released earlier than the 77.18 and than the 77.56:

https://www.nvidia.com/en-us/drivers/winnt-archive/

maybe they are worth a try .

Been trying few versions already. 66.93, 71.84, 77.72. Also that nvidia site it broken. You can find files if got direct link example http://download.nvidia.com/Windows/77.72/77.72_winnt4_english.exe but they broke site to it. Need use some wayback machine and copying to find them

Yes, but googling for the file name should be possible to find a copy:

77.56_winnt4_english.exe

Then it has to be seen if they are actually suitable to your card :dubbio:.

All of them did same result sadly. No warnings on event log why when booted vga mode.

I tried both of those same result sadly. AGP 6xxx card should work on nt 4.0 sp6 and my p4p800 mainboard supports nt 4.0.

did you uninstall previous driver before installing next one? it may not replace newer driver when you install older one.

I did remove drive before new one every time and even did reinstall OS to verify there is was no corruption. First I installed Windows NT 4.0 with sp3 from my original unscratched finnish cd then upgraded to Service Pack 6a from my Microsoft service pack 6a update cd (ordered from microsoft long ago)

I wonder if it could be an issue related to some "default" or "pre-set" settings in the driver (only in the NT 4.00 version) or in the registry that is incompatible with your monitor.

Cannot say if there is a way or a program like setres (setres won't likely work in NT 4.00):

https://atrandom.iansharpe.com/setres.php

to set the resolution and the refresh rate to some basic vga setting, like 640x480@60Hz

Good ol' PoweStrip should work on NT 4.00, but cannot say if it could be useful in safe mode:

I tried use vga and on reboot had glitch but this time black background instead of green. Seems any reso does different type of pattern. Kernel was halted point glitch happened bit no errors on log.
