Anyone using Vista on your main PC (bare metal, not virtualised)? I do.

I have a PC with Vista running bare metal.

CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 1500x (4 cores at 3.8GHz) (older AGESA so Vista works)

8GB RAM (2133MHz)

GPU: 2 x NVIDIA GeForce GTS 450 (SLI)

HDD: 250GB Seagate Barracuda (with Vista on it)

SSD: Kingston A1000 240GB (with Windows 8.1 on it)

MOBO: MSI B350 PC MATE

Windows Vista Ultimate SP2 x64 (Boxed copy)

It runs very well. Only struggle is that I need a DVD to get SP2 and the USB drivers on it.

You don't have to limit yourself to < 1 GB (some very recent motherboards leave that for 32bit OSes), 3.5 GB or 4 GB when you enable/un-cripple PAE.

http://www.geoffchappell.com/notes/windows/license/memory.htm?tx=7

Server 2008 Enterprise and Datacenter x86 (not sure if Standard's RAM limits were upped from 2003) also allow the use of the extra RAM without modifications.

I'm not sure I understand , I have 3.6 GB fully usable on one mobo with DDR3 and 4GB on another mobo with DDR2 , wuthout any patches with ordinary x86 Vista SP1 . What exactly does this patch do ? Is there a direct link to the patch ?

It was a pretty common/popular motherboard in 2011/2012 . And , actually , nothing weird , except that

I very much doubt they ever sold Vista Ultimate ! OEM ! with that motherboard made in 2011.

Yes, there are PAE patchers available:

https://wj32.org/wp/2016/02/01/pae-patch-updated-for-windows-10/

(should be OK to post, as it simply patches existing ntoskrnl/winload)

I got Vista Ultimate x64 running on old dell M6400 mobile workstation.

Specs:

Core2duo X9100,2x4gb ddr3, Nvidia Quadro 3700M 1gb, 17" 1920x1200 glass panel, backlit keyboard and dock with 230w power brick. For hard drives got 160gb wd scorpio black for OS and 320gb wd scorpio blue for games/software.

It runs vista because last user had upgraded Windows vista business on it to ultimate and he gave me install dvd with packaging so wanted give it a shot. After fresh install and updates it ran pretty well. I use Mypal web browser on it. That machine is very fast on up to date vista and got excellent panel for laptop.

So the whole 32GB will be available ? Nice ...

This topic is about experience , I have had the most pleasant experience with Vista SP1 , perhaps you know , is there a chance to implement DX11 to it ? Thanks

Wow, that's what I'd call a completely future-proofed machine (1200p glass panel!)!

Your Vista is up to date? Using Chromium with extended kernel is what I recommend instead of browsing on Mypal. You have lots of advantages such as better content viewing on most sites and google meet also works with chromium on Vista. It does not work on mypal/ new moon or similar browsers.

Anyone using Vista Business purely because you need the aero interface, the handy backup and restore center with full functionality and presentation mode but do not care about Bitlocker (who even uses Bitlocker these days?) and media center and don't mind sacrificing them? I do.
