Yahoo mail and OAuth2

Sampei.Nihira

Recommended Posts

From 20 October, anyone with a Yahoo e-mail account will have to set up OAuth2 authentication in the e-mail client.

To do this you need to enter the client app and generate a password as shown in the figure below:

With MailNews the operation is OK.
When I open MailNews I can use OAuth2

With Thunderbird 52.9.1 it doesn't work, there is an error.

If any MSFN users who has a Yahoo account wants to take a test and report in this topic if they have different results than mine.
Thank you all.:hello:

P.S. Now, after a reboot of PC, MailNews doesn't work.:no:

There are two problems here, firstly the OAuth2 issue, and secondly the fact that a lot of e-mail providers are dropping support for TLS v1, and mandating at least TLS v1.2.
I still use Eudora for my e-mail, and have since about 1995! It's the best e-mail client ever made IMO.
In recent months I've had to jump through a few hoops to keep it working with my Sky e-mail account, which is managed by Yahoo.
I had to get an "application specific password" some time ago, and more recently I had to use an update provided by the Hermes project to add TLS v1.2 support.
Without both of those, it would have become useless after 25 years!
It's now working fine, but other legacy e-mail clients must all be facing the same issues.

Hi, thanks for your contribution.:)

Qualys test shows that both servers support TLS 1.0 and 1.1:

And MailNews supports OAuth2:

but when I enter OAuth2 an error message says this protocol is not supported by the IMAP server.

I tried in the pc with Win 10 and Thunderbird v.78.2.0 and there are no such problems.:no:

That's good to see, but don't depend on it staying like that!
There's evidence that Yahoo and others are gradually updating the requirements on their servers, and all the servers will I'm sure start rejecting TLS v1 logins eventually.
I'm using yahoo.co.uk servers which already reject TLS v1 logins.

Some more info:

From 20 October it will be necessary to login to Yahoo Mail via browser.

NM28 has no login problems.

I believe that even with Icedove UXP like MailNews and Thunderbird 52.9.1. It is impossible to connect to the Yahoo account.

But a miracle of our

@roytam1

is always possible.:whistle::rolleyes::dubbio::hello:

I also got the AOL-Yahoo Oct 20 notice...

I am seeing the same error here for my AOL IMAP accounts, MailNews latest, and Vista32. I tried to remove and re-add the account or just manually switch from Normal password to Oauth2.

And MacOS and latest Tbird are working with AOL Oauth2, just as a test to make sure my account is functioning properly on the AOL side.

@roytam1Thanks so much for New Moon and MailNews!!!

act8192 reports on W.S.F. that it has no OAuth2 authentication problems with SeaMonkey.

Probably the same is achieved with IceApe-UXP Suite (topic - My browser builds by Roytam1).

Any MSFN member who can take this test?

That will not work.
The version of SeaMonkey that act8192 uses has the same specifications for the email client as Thunderbird 60.
The first version compatible with OAuth2 and Yahoo Mail.

P.S.

I found the code for OAuth2 + Yahoo that was added in Thunderbird 60.
I ask

@roytam1

if porting to MailNews is possible.

MSFN members who need Email Notifier software can use POP Peeper:

Quote

.....POP Peeper also implements standard security measures including SSL/TLS and OAuth2 (Gmail, Yahoo, Outlook).

I deleted PopMan from my pc and will soon manually enter my 4 email accounts.

The software is also portable (Pro and Free) and also works in Windows 2000.:thumbup

  • 2 weeks later...

I have 3 applications authorized to access my Yahoo email account.

1) MailNews which is recognized as Thundebird
2) Pop Peeper
3) Gmail app on my smartphone

I recommend MSFN users to especially check apps on mobile devices:

No problem after October 20th.

How did you get this working? I am on latest Mailnews.

I switched to oauth2 for my AOL. I get the browser popup and then I get this error: ""Please reload the page and try again or use another browser."

But I can't copy the URL or right-click on anything.

From the problem you describe I would not want AOL Mail to suffer from Yahoo's problems as well:

https://github.com/roytam1/UXP/commit/056e62198ae1fe3ab4286e775adc8caaa3b39afa

Try using your browser to login to your AOL account and if that doesn't work, change SSUAO.

P.S.

What is your default browser?

I'm on New Moon v28 32-bit latest. I can login to AOL Mail there.

@roytam1 Any ideas?

Have you set NM28 as your default browser?

The hypotheses are 2:

a) Regression of the code.

b) Something wrong with you OAuth2 authentication procedure.

P.S.

 If I remember correctly, after Thunderbird 60 another patch was needed for AOL accounts.
This (fleeting) memory of mine should first be verified.
Then if it's okay to find the patch code and then check if you can add it to MailNews.

I have verified.

Thunderbird 60.9.1 - Fixed problem with Google authentication OAuth2. (But this bug doesn't affect MailNew because I did a OAuth2 Gmail authentication without problems).

Thunderbird 68.5.0 - Added support Oauth 2.0 for POP3 accounts.
