[WIP] Windows Vista Extended Kernel

Recommended Posts

I found a version block for Windows 8/8.1 in the file, but nothing for Vista.

So I think the D3D parts of 368.xx/372.70 are like this:

900 series and below: works on Vista as with old drivers

Pascal support added in these new drivers that have no official Vista support, so no workie on Vista

Drivers have specific Windows 7 directives, so Pascal probably works when Windows 7 directives are in force.

So I think that once I can get the drivers to use the Windows 7 directives, that may be enough to get D3D working as good as Windows 7. Possibly including 12 unless DXGI does not cooperate.

would i still need to use winload.efi and ntoskrnl for these updates or theyre not necessary?

Not for any changes to 372.70. Only for newer drivers once ntoskrnl is extended.

I decided to see how well 372.70 worked on my GTX 970, and when I tried playing some games, this happened.

3DMark 11 worked great though, as long as I used windowed mode.

The errors also happened on 365.19, so I'm guessing it's a issue with the extended kernel. One of the games even officially support Vista, so I don't know why they're crashing.

Edit: I don't know why MSFN spoilers are broken. The part at the bottom of the spoiler is supposed to be outside the spoiler, and I can't edit or even select the text to fix it.

does any game work to be testable? perhaps windows score assessment?

i get 5.9 even on a 1060gtx , but on w7 its 7.9

Rust works, but it requires you to mod the absolute newest version of Steam to work.

Also, I believe that Vista maxes out at 5.9

Sounds good , but is the fps like it should be?

With these settings, you should mostly be above 60 at 1440p if the GPU is working properly, at 1080p, it'll definitely be over 60.

Occlusion Culling might improve performance.

That's modern web snazz for you: if it is broken in anything but Chrome, don't fix it. I seriously wonder why we run on a software like this, though it's by far better than most of the crap that many forums use now (XenForo and Discourse are my enemies lol).

There however does seem to be fallbacks when JavaScript is disabled - so try to do that as it will disable the WYSIWYG post editor, you should be able to edit the spoiler then.

I know it's unrelated but it should be helpful :P

I just checked the kernel32 fault and it is not in a section of the file that I modified/added. It's in a subroutine called by ReplaceFileW, CreateDirectoryExW and indirectly by CopyFilesExW. :dubbio:

Vista's WEI does indeed max out at 5.9.

It kinda broke the formatting, but that's easily fixed. Thanks for the solution

No problem. :P

On a side note, is there anything in the way of... a collated guide to doing all of this? I've seen some links and info sparsed all over the forum, it's kinda confused me (like, even getting started from a stock SP2 installation I just done).
