Firefox 24 - 52 for ME and 98

Recommended Posts

I have standard Firefox 31.8.0 ESR more or less working with only standard updates + KernelEx 4.5.2 + latest KernelEx updates.

The only issue (and it's a big one) is that javascript is almost completely broken.  I have to turn it off in order to browse anywhere, or else the browser will lock up hard and then crash, occasionally taking Windows out with it.

No one seems to have devised a fix as yet, but it stands to reason that the problem must be a manifestation of an incomplete or nonexistent implementation within KernelEx of something the javascript engine depends on.  I would think that if that were so, it would throw up an error, but who knows?  Maybe it's failing before it can?

As the community researches the problem, it can hopefully be better understood so a fix can be made.

My approach for the "search engine list" failure on FF28+: With the first run remove Google from the search engine Manager list, maybe more engines you don't want and set the search.json file quickly to read only. Then add your favorite engines. FF creates a new file search.json.tmp. The new engines are listed in Data\profiles\searchplugins as xml files, the preinstalled in the Firefox program folder - Firefox\browser\searchplugins.

History: In general,  restore previous session, recently closed tabs and recently closed window can work on FF24 - 27, 31.7 and 35.0.1. The rest not. I haven't checked the other versions. Bookmarks aren't saved. I haven't connected a printer the last years and the cartridges are not usable anymore.

...but previous Firefox versions had the ability to let you use the tabs below the address bar, not on top. Apparently, around v3x.x they stopped it? That could fix the problem with the rendering of these tabs.

Toggle "browser.tabs.onTop" to false doesn't solve the glitch on FF27. Version 31.7 doesn't have that boolean anymore. Creating that boolean and set it to false does nothing.

Are there any Firefox extensions/ themes archives from that time (2014 - 2015)?

The "ca-archive-2.0.1.xpi", min. version set to 24 in the rdf file, gives a unusable, blank add-on page on FF35. A reboot to XP and running it on FF52.9 is very inconvenient.

Hi schwups. No add-on required, manually search the lists and retrieve from archive[dot]org.

OK, got back to my 98 machine, and the last version of CTR that would install on Firefox 31.x is 1.5.3.
To fix the rendering artifacts in the tab bar, I've found that setting the appearance (first drop down list on the "Tabs (1)" screen) to Australized V2 works well.
Still no Javascript, but at least we're at a point now where the UI chrome is 99% functional (the popups for installing addons, saving passwords and such have big black lines around them, likely due to the fact that the transparency effects they use are broken and missing on Win9x).

Good finding! Yesterday I also installed the ClassicThemeRestorer, but I haven't looked for preferences. I saw the same tab artifacts like on FF27 and 28.

I believe SquareTabsClassicV2 works as good as Australized V2.

CTR1.5.3 is available on GitHub, too. CTR 1.5.3

I don't have payed much attention to it today. But many thanks. That's a hell of a lot! You have to know exactly what you're looking for. Is there something like a category search?

Hi schwups. No category search, just open the master list file (from extensions.zip) in WordPad and filter search what you want. It is best for those who already have a good idea what they want or just patiently page down through the list.

Yeah, same prob in KMG74 :-(
It's really stupid. I do keep suspecting it could easily be fixed for older browsers too (how?) by probably just adjusting a few lines (which?), but no addon experts here to help. Sigh.

A few addons are still left here, but for Firefox only those that were also compatible with Seamonkey:

Only mini-descriptions and no version info, but quick and handy to load:

Firefox addons in waybackmachine:
Prob: seems to be stored only partly, and SEARCH field doesn't work

  • 2 weeks later...

FF often crashes when I open a new tab. The exact reason is still unclear to me - what settings lead to it? It has to do with the new tab page. Setting "browser.newtabpage.enabled" to false solves it. Then the page remains blank. This is basically not a problem, because the content of the page is without function anyway on ME. The other possibilities to continue the work on the new tab are on hand.
